If your child was bit by another at daycare ...

What was the process? How did the director? teachers parents? handle it? What was ultimately done? Was it first offense?

Re: If your child was bit by another at daycare ...

This happened multiple times to my oldest DS while he was in daycare (3mos until 2yo). It was always the same child who bit but I know their policy was to not reveal the biter. Their policy was to alert me, but no incident sheets were completed for each occurrence. They explained to me it the situation/circumstances under which the bites occurred and outlined their approaches for helping make sure the bites won't happen again. They repeatedly said the child was pre-verbal and it was out of frustration, but it continued to occur as the child began to communicate verbally so I frequently Chat Icon They would shadow the biter, and tried to give the biter more one-one attention in the room but I dont' think it helped the situation. It even happened one time when I was doing drop-off and I saw the "biter" lean on towards DS (around 17mos old) and the sound that came out of DS broke my heart. Poor kid.
I kept on it and always asked the teacher/director what their plans were to handle the biter. The biter's parents were supernice and couldn't figure out how to make her stop and to my knowledge the biter was never removed from that room until she moved up to the next age group.

Re: If your child was bit by another at daycare ...

She’s been bit twice.
First time, they notified me with a form that I had to sign off on. They cannot reveal who bit her. Although an assistant told me later anyway. There was one child who was a chronic biter but it wasn’t that child who bit AJ. She was non verbal so couldn’t tell me who or what happened.

Second time, I was notified via form again. This time before signing it I looked at AJ and said “who bit you” and she clearly identified the biter. I asked what was being done and they had no answers. I sat with the director as the class itself had several issues with biting and I was told there was nothing she could do. Kid bite. The biting parents are notified but that’s about it.

That was the last time that AJ was bit. After that she was moved up into the pre-k class.

Same procedures were taken for all the times she’s been shoved, scraped herself or been injured in any way.

DS was bit once. I was informed via phone call and had to sign an incident report at school.

Nobody saw the bite occur but, my son started scolding his biter and then the teacher saw the bite marks.

DD was bit once. An incident report was filled out and we found out who did it (DD's teacher became good friends with my parents). The outlined what happened and what they did afterwards and what they were doing to prevent it.

Another time, DD did the biting. The girl she bit was also a teacher there and no incident report was filled out. They called me directly to let me know and all the teachers saw the incident and the little girl was provoking DD who was also teething at the time. The little girl's mom didn't see a need to fill a report out because she saw it and she felt that it was out of frustration that DD bit her daughter.

They were diligent about the kids once the biting all started and have not had an incident since then.

I have the opposite situation - my DD is the biter.Chat Icon

She is 15 months old. An incident report has been filed sometimes, but not everytime. Well, I haven't had to sign one each time I should say, so I don't believe one was filed each time. We are crazy on top of it at home. If she bites, she gets a time out. It's working and we've only had two biting incidents at home in the last I'd say two weeks. Which is great considering she was biting many many times a day. When we have play dates with my friend's daughter or niece she doesn't bite. School is a different story. In almost 4 months we've had at least 5 incidents. She has a shadow, they tried moving her up to the next class to be with the bigger kids, she's getting OT...they have done it all. The Director truly believes it's a stage she will outgrow. Sometimes she bites out of frustration, sometimes it's purely out of not getting what she wants, and sometimes she's just trying to kiss / show affection and it ends with a bite.

It makes me crazy. I wrote an apology letter to the parents of the first kid. They never told me who the other kids were. I feel horrible and stress everyday while she is there. Luckily none of the parents have gotten angry about it. Just wanted to share from the perspective of the mom of a biter. Chat Icon

it happens......

we first got a poem notice saying ds was bitten. the next week, we got the same notice saying ds bit another. no phone calls. They can't tell us who bit our kid.

supposedly our old daycare had a policy the biter would be sent home if it opened the skin, but ds one day came home with a bite - pierced the skin and they didn't even notice/treat it :(

after about the third or fourth times, I asked what the plan was for the kid. They had him "shadowed" by a teacher everyday after. They eventually had to tell him he was no longer welcomed as he continued to bite and parents threatened to pull their kids out. I received Incidident reports bc the kid lfet marks and broke the skin.

Re: If your child was bit by another at daycare ...

back story ... DS is 2.5y was bitten by a 3.5yo (its Montessori) ... didn't break skin, and DS sobbed a bit, but didn't really cry that anyone noticed and he didn't complain about it. BUT I was waiting right out the door and realized someting was very off, so I asked him and he said the boy bit him, by name. We went to the boy, and I told my DS to tell the boy 'DO NOT BITE ME! IT HURT ME!'

The parents where called, the director gave me therapy I was very shaken up.

its one thing for a 15mo or even a 2y ... but a 3.5yo ...

Anyway, they assured me this behavior was very atypical of the accused boy. And that if they see that behavior resurface, he will be removed from the school.
