Am I wrong or the Godfather wrong?
I accidently planned ds's 2nd birthday party on his godfather's birthday. I thought it was the day after the party, turns out its the same day as the party. Although its ds's 2nd birthday, its the first time that we are having a party for him.
So godfather says, I'm not coming, my girlfriend USUALLY plans something for me that day. (i.e. Not that I have plans, I MAY have plans). He does have 2 kids of his own and my dh is godfather to the oldest and I am godmother to the youngest- we never miss anything of theirs- school plays, birthday parties, etc.
So ds's godfather makes little effort to see him other than when we bring ds to him.
Their birthdays are 4 days apart and I feel like this will happen yearly that he doesnt come to the party to celebrate ds's birthday. The party is 1.5 hours and this is not a milestone birthday for the godfather.
Who's wrong?

he is acting childish IMO. Once you pass around age 18, you don't celebrate adult birthdays (except for milestone ones). That day should be for your son.

WTH? Is he 5? No, you're not wrong, and his GF is free to plan something before or after the party. She can take him to brunch or go out to dinner.
eta: I celebrate all my birthdays (and I'm WAY over 18 lol) but recognize that I don't own the entire day. It's part of being an adult. {{Sigh}} Sorry you're dealing with this.

Ditto. I don't get grown adults who act like the world has to stop on their birthday. Grow the eff up.

Re: Am I wrong or the Godfather wrong?
As upset or hurt as you may be, it really is his decision what he does that day... I've learned to not rely/count on others. The decision I make in the same situation may be different from someone's else's decision. And at the end of the day, no one is at fault. Do I think he should be going to your DS' party over his own maybe plans? Yep... But it just goes to show that everyone has diff priorities.

OMG, he's a grown man for crying out loud! He should be embarrassed to even be thinking this! If he doesn't want to come to the party then I'd say good riddance! What a tool!

he's acting like he's the child. Although, if he barely makes an effort to be around your DS, i'm not surprised. He should be more thanable to celebrate his won birthday and attend your DS's 1½ hour birthday party as well. Guess this might go to show how important your DS is to him. So sorry you have to deal with this!

This exactly. I might be peeved that he can't stop by the party for an hour because he's a close friend of the family but no one is "wrong" or right in this situation. Then again I'm also not big on the godparent having to be present for everything for the rest of the child's life...to me it's just a symbolic, day-of ceremony thing but whatever. Anything more than that is a bonus.

I wound't care if Godfather comes or not. Your DS will not remember and it is godfathers loss.

Re: Am I wrong or the Godfather wrong?
The Godfather is being such a baby! If their birthdays are 4 days apart, there will be yearly overlap since most parties are on the weekends.
You did absolutely nothing wrong. Just don't be offended if he does something else with his family to celebrate.
It should be so easy for him to come to your DS's party for 1.5 hours and still do his own thing.

Re: Am I wrong or the Godfather wrong?
When I noticed, I probably would have arranged a small cake and song for the god father and told the girl friend of my plans, invite them to join and celebrate.
I do think he is being silly.

He's wrong - unless he's 95 years old, the 2 year old CHILD's birthday trumps the grown man's celebration - ESPECIALLY when it's your own Godchild !!

Re: Am I wrong or the Godfather wrong?
Honestly, he is acting like a big baby. He needs to get over it. I don't know any grown adults in my real life that actually give a cr@p about their birthday anymore, birthdays are for kids. He can celebrate his birthday any other time that week. He's being ridiculous IMO.

Re: Am I wrong or the Godfather wrong?
I'm going with both.......
yeah, godfather is an adult. Birthdays aren't as big a deal for adults - but you just said he has two kids..... I love to celebrate my birthday and dh's with my son.
I don't see it being that big a deal go forward as there's two days on the weekend, and you'll probably remember now which day his birthday falls on after this whole incident.
Since its a really short party, I don't see why he can't fit it into his schedule this year if its lunch and have a dinner of his own.
