Receptive language question (16-18 months)

I always see and hear people say "if they understand everything you're saying it's fine.", I'm just wondering HOW much are toddlers supposed to be understanding at about 16-18 months. I'm unsure of how much my DS should know at 18 months, 16 corrected.

He understands some commands like "go get ___ and give it to me.", "throw it in the garbage.", "give me a kiss/hug", "clap your hands", he points to things when asked like "where's mommy/grandpa?", points out some things in books when asked and points to mostly all his body parts. When I say things like "let's go bye bye" or "lets go in the car" he gets excited and goes towards the door. If I give him socks or a shirt and say "put them on" he tries to. He says about 12 words.

I have nothing really to go by since I'm a first time mom, I don't know anyone IRL with children his age either. So, I look stuff up online (I know, bad idea lol) I feel like he understands a lot of what's said, but certainly not EVERYTHING that's said to him.

Thanks for reading :)

That sounds appropriate!

Are there things you're saying that's he's not understanding? If so, can you give an example?

Thanks!

Sometimes I'm not sure if he doesn't understand or if he does. Like if im pouring him a cup of milk and I'm not doing it fast enough he'll cry and I'll say "one minute", I don't think he gets that. If he puts something in his mouth he's not supposed to I'll say "take that out of your mouth", he usually won't. When I say "no, don't do that" he'll give me a smirk and usually continue his behavior. As far as commands go he'll usually do what is asked, unless he's ignoring me. But let's just say today I was to say "go flush the toilet" he would have no idea what I'm saying, because it's never been said to him. After showing him a couple times he'd definitely get it though (I'm not going to show him that though!! Lol)

That sounds perfectly appropriate for his age Chat Icon

Waiting/patience is something that's hard for even my almost 3-year old to understand!

Instead of saying "take that out of your mouth" you might want to simplify that and say "OUT OF MOUTH!" and then take it out, so he can start to learn a little more. Then you can expand on that and say, "yuck! We don't put that in our mouth!" so he can hear the full model.

If you're saying "no don't do that" and he's smirking... oh, he totally understands! He's testing you! Chat Icon

He's going to be learning new concepts ALL of the time - like "flush" and all of that.

Sounds like he's right on track. (I'm a speech-language pathologist)

Thank you so much!! This is very helpful and reassuring.

I figure he's playing me with that smirk of his. I can tell when/if he's done something he knows is wrong just by his facial expression.

I was unsure if it was normal to not understand something that's said once. Itll take a few times of showing/saying something to DS for him to comprehend. If I go by people on the Internet, their 18 month olds understand their political musings Chat Icon

MY DS is 18 months and does much of the same as your LO. As an early childhood educator, I can tell you that it is more important that your child has a well developed receptive language. The expressive language will come in due time, especially if your LO was a premie (I'm assuming since you said corrected age). Keep modeling the actions as you say them and repeating tasks you want him to complete while showing him what you want to do. In no time you won't be able to get him to stop talking!! LOL
