Time out question

When you put dc in time out, do they cry and carry on? How long and where do you put them?

Do they have to stop crying before you take them out?

Ds is 2.5 and has been a nightmare lately , lot of attitude, defiance and refusing to sleep on top of everything.

He really goes nuts during time outs, but they have been pretty ineffective Chat Icon

Time out question

Time out should last only the number of minutes that they are years old. My son is 2.5 so we do 2 and a half minute time outs. Sometimes he will cry the whole time. I don't wait for him to stop crying. When the time is up, I sit down with him and ask him why I put him in time out. We talk about it briefly, I make sure he apologizes, then I gig and kiss him, tell him I love him, and then it's over.

Re: Time out question

Sometimes he cries the whole time but when his time is up I go to talk to him. The only time I will make him stay in time out for another 2 minutes is if he doesnt apologize for why he was put there in the first place.

Re: Time out question

My 2 1/2 year old loves time out. She sits there with a big smile on her face. She looks forward to it and will even go sit in time out on her own as a part of her play. Chat Icon

So it has not been an effective strategy for us...

Re: Time out question

It depends. Sometimes he's crying sometimes he's not crying. Either way, he's there for 2-3 mins, no more. At the end of the time-out (crying or not) we go over and talk to him again about why he was put in time out. We put him in the same place for every timeout (it's a bench in out dining room).
