Does you credit card get compromised a lot?
I swear I feel like this is the 400th time we have had to close out one card or another for fradulent activity on the account.
Yesterday they alerted me to someone ordering an Ipod from New Egg.com with my credit card. The person had my name and billing address and everything.
The ship to was my name at another address.
They wouldn't disclose that address to me.
Here is my thing- if this asshole stole my credit card info and used it to order something and have it shipped to their house- how dumb is that ? Because now we know exactly who stole my card info no?
Or the person who ordered $400 worth of plane tickets on my card another time- well don't you need your real name and photo ID on those tickets to board the plane?
Right there- you have the criminal.
What am I missing here? Can't they go after these people since they have addresses, etc?

I work at a credit union and unfortunately, it's pretty hard to actually prosecute the people-unless you see a large number of fraud on your particular cardholder's numbers by the same exact person.. which is rare. Most of these fraudsters use different cards from different banks.. with fake names & addresses. I'm surprised they didn't catch the airline ticket guy though. One way you can help is by filing a police report!

I hear it happens often, but I only had the problem when my actual physical cards were taken. The accounts all have fraud alerts on them now though so if anything goes weird they contact me immediately

We do shop online A LOT...but only at reputable sites that are SUPPOSED to be protecting our credit card info with encryption etc.
It is just REALLY disturbing how often this happens to us.
It's never an issue because the credit card companies are great at flagging it and removing the charges but you think they'd be able to go after these people better! After all they are shipping stolen merchandise to themselves...they must be easy to find!

I would wonder if your computer has a virus that is giving the thieves your card info when you buy things. I would probably have someone who knows a lot about computers make sure I don't have any viruses and that all the virus protection is as up to date as possible. That would really freak me out, I buy online all the time and have never had a problem.

The same thing happened to me a couple of years ago. Someone ordered over $8,000 woth of car parts online. I was wondering the same thing, if they shipped it to an address other than mine, they should know who stole my credit card.

Fortunately this has never happened to me. The one credit card I use is pretty good at catching potential fraud - fortunately it really was me doing the purchasing! I spent about $1000 one day at BJ's getting a patio set. I wasn't even out the door when I got a phone call AND an email that a lot of money was charged on my card and that I needed to call and validate my purchase. I was seriously about 20 feet from the register when this happened.
You know now that I say this, I'm going to be a victim of fraud.

Usually when it happens, it's not the actual company that they get your card info from, it's the third-party processor. That's how most major breaches occur.

Prior to the internet boom, this happened a few times to my parents - and my mom is the most anal person I know about destroying personal info! It was determined both times that it was an inside job from the bank issuing the card.

Most of the time the credit card company will notice an unusual charge, flag it, and call us.
This time the website that someone triesd to order something from with my card info called me to verify I had made the purchase. Not sure what made them suspicious but they were. When I called my credit card to inform them and close the acct they said they had the charge flagged as suspicious too.
