Ear Infection
My DS was on amoxycillan for 10 days for an ear infection and cold. He was 100 better for about 5 days..yesterday he woke up sick again (cold/cough)..just took him to the doctor for his follow-up app't for the first ear infection and it did not go away!!! Now dr. wants to put him on a stronger antibiotic! How do u feel about this? I hate that he has to be on another antibiotic..feel like it destroying his immune system. Do doctors always prescribe antibiotics with ear infections?

Ear Infection
My DD had to go on a stronger antibiotic once for an ear infection. Some don't give anything, but she was clearly miserable and we knew before the first dose of antibiotics was done that it was not working for her. It went away with the second round.

I agree with PP. Its unfortunate but sometimes you NEED a stronger punch to kick it out. AJ had several ear infections and has been through all the antibiotics at least once.
If he's suffering I'd do it.

Antibiotics are needed for ear infections because it is typically a bacterial infection. Unfortunately sometimes a second round is needed if the strain is a strong one.

I know some people that do holistic remedies for ear infections, such as garlic oil drops and breast milk in the ears, with varying degrees of success. For your DD, it sounded like something stronger is needed.
I personally understand your hesitation. It's SO scary, with so many antibiotic resistant bacteria and whatnot, coming from overuse of antibiotics. Sometimes it's so hard to m ow what the right thing to do is!

Re: Ear Infection
Amoxycillin never works for either of my kids. Both kids always had ongoing ear infections and my DS #2 had to have tubes put in bc he basically had an infection for 6 months that just never went away. It's pretty commmon

Re: Ear Infection
was the story of my life my son's first winter
Amox and zithromax did nothing for his ear infectios.
Suprex worked wonders and FAST!
If it makes you feel any better, DS was not sick at all, not even once his second winter

Re: Ear Infection
ok.thanks. He is not complaining about his ear, but i guess tomorrow i'll start him on the new antibiotic. Poor guy is really sick with congestion and a cough though..he was just sick two weeks ago..i can't believe this, how could he get sick back to back like this???? i wish we could just live in a bubble sometimes..this stinks. Also have a 4month old and have been trying sooo hard to keep them apart...don't need her getting sick again. This is hard!!!!
