Newborn and family vaccinations

My sister is having her baby by scheduled c-section on Friday. Her and her husband and 3yr old daughter have gotten their flu shot & are vaccinated for whooping cough. However, her in laws are not and are not planning to until later this month. She is worried about them being around the baby un-vaccinated as we head into flu/sick season. Plus, the flu shot wouldn't be effective for a couple of weeks even if they got it today. They don't want to offend the in laws, but are worried about the exposure to the newborn.
I guess I'm looking for advice or personal experience on how to handle that. Does she keep the baby away until they are vaccinated? I'm sure that could cause a bunch of unwanted drama

They are adults, I'm sure they're fully capable of staying away from the baby if they felt sick. I wouldnt keep my baby away honestly.

Same here. What would she do if they had a latex or egg allergy. You can't get the flu shot with either of those allergies.... I would not keep my newborn away from healthy grandparents.

Re: Newborn and family vaccinations

If I told my inlaws or my parents they couldn't see a newborn bc they weren't vaccinated, it would not be a pretty sight.

I personally would never dictate who needed vaccinations to my family. I trust that if they feel sick, they would not come around my child.

All the adults I know are super cautious around newborns. I'm sure that if they are reasonable, they will stay away from the baby if they even had a sniffle. And they certainly won't touch the baby's face or sneeze or cough on the baby if they felt bad in the slightest. I think it's fine.

Newborn and family vaccinations

My parents did not have either and I gave birth in December. THey were not sick at the time so it was not an issue. If they were going to be care givers for my DS I would have had them get both vacinations but just for normal visits it is not an issue.

I agree. She can ask and make sure they wash their hands before holding the baby, although most people do that anyway.

Vaccines are not the be all end all of health/sickness. I would never keep someone away from the baby bc they weren't up to date with vaccines. You can still contract the other 20+ strains of the flu even with the shot, there are hundreds of other viruses that we don't get vaccinated for, etc etc.

I'm confused... if they don't have a shot, they can be contagious durring the incubation period but not feel sick......so how would they know to stay away

Re: Newborn and family vaccinations

Whooping cough scares me like crazy (Newborns/Babies can be very sick and I have read some articles where a baby has died from it)
I went to a high risk Dr during my pregnancy and we discussed this topic (she actually brought it up) and there recommendation to us as parents was anyone who holds your baby or has direct contact should have an updated Tdap Vaccine (whooping cough/pertusis etc)

Doesnt really matter. If they are sick and don't know or totally healthy, they still need to wash their hands first. Period, end of story.

If however, they have a nagging cough thats just off and on or a sneeze (its just allergies) or a little tired, Yeah, its best you just keep your distance.

That said, for me I didn't separate that. Whopping cough wasn't that big of a deal with AJ was born, so that never came up. I refuse the flu shot (as you know) so I certainly wasn't going to harass folks holding AJ. Jim's step father came in with sniffles and I made him wash her hands and not breathe on her face. Then I wiped her down! LOL

We still dont have the extra whooping cough shot and we still don't do the flu shots in this house. Meh.

That's ridiculous imo. In-laws don't have to get vaccinated bc of a new baby!

Agreed. As long as they wash their hands and not currently sick, I think it's fine.

I am a total germophobe, so I understand their concern. That said, they have to realize that there are countless numbers of everyday viruses that people are walking around with every day, ones that there will never be a vaccination for. A common cold virus can cause a fever in a newborn. A fever in a newborn means a trip to the ER and possibly a spinal tap.

So I wouldn't bar any family members from seeing the baby over their vaccination status. I would just do my best to ensure they were in good health, and make them wash their hands before holding the baby.

Re: Newborn and family vaccinations

From what i understand, u can be exposed to whooping cough as an adult and not show signs right away - and pass it on to a newborn. And the prob with a newborn and whooping cough is that they dont exhibit signs the way adults do. An adult with whooping cough will make a whooping sound whereas a baby just won't be able to catch its breath. It can be deadly to a baby. And there have been recent reports of it on long island. So, im not being a stickler for the flu vaccine - but anyone who plans to hold my baby in the hospital (my parents, dh, in-laws and sister ) all got or have appts to get the vaccine.
