When do you insist on taking DC to the doctor?

My DS is 9.5 months old and on monday caught a stomach bug. He was throwing up and has diarrhea. I called the doctor on Monday and they said not to bring him in. Give him A LOT of fluids, make him feel comfortable.

Tuesday I called again because he still had diarrhea all day and threw up once. They gave me the same advice and said the first sign on dehydration is if he is not playing. He is still playing and happy.

Wednesday, he seemed fine except he had diarrhea all day. I didn't call the doctor.

Thursday, still had diarrhea all day. He is still playing and laughing but if I give him his milk the diarrhea literally comes out of his diaper. (Sorry to be graffic) He is drinking a lot of pedialyte. I called the dr. again and told her everything. She said to keep feeding him- even if it gives him diarhea- he needs to eat. Keep giving him lots of fluid. I am doing everything right.

My question is, am I being a crazy new mom and there really is nothing that they can do, so I have to ride it out. Or today is day 5 and he still is having diarhea, I should insist on bringing him in?

Sorry this is so long. Thanks for the advice!

He does not have a fever. He is drinking mainly pedialyte. I am giving him solid foods and some milk (just not as much milk). It really just causes him to have diarrhea. I feel bad for him cause he now has diaper rash =(

I would bring him in. 5 days is a long time for a bug.

Is he still throwing up 5 days later, or just diarrhea? Diarrhea can last a few more days once the vomitting stops.

I would maybe not give him any milk for a day or two and see how it goes.

I would skip the milk for a day and see if the diarrhea stops. I'm sure he's lost weight but he will make that up once this nasty bug is gone. If he still has it then I would push to see the dr. Also stick to binding foods like bananas and applesauce.

I would definately stop the milk for at least a few days. DS had something one time where he threw up and then diarrhea for days. When I talked to my doctor and they asked about milk I said yeah we'd been giving it to him. She said no milk- and it was for at least a week. He seemed fine but I guess the diarrhea messes with the system. Then, the body can't process the lactose so you give more and it continues the cycle.
After we stopped it for a while, he was fine. He wasn't really upset by any of it but waking every morning to poop all down his pajamas was making me crazy!!Chat Icon Chat Icon

Hope your LO feels better soon!!
