do you battle over the TV wih DH

He ALWAYS had the stupid thing on & it drives me crazyChat Icon
I was never a big TV person but I really don't want DD watching TV all day.
She's only 14 months & loves TV. I don't know if it's a phase but I don't want her watching more then a show or two a day (like when I need to shower or cook.)
I am constantly telling him to turn it off & he gets all upset & tells me he grew up with it always on & every "normal" family keeps it on in the background.
Of coarse implying that I'm crazy because me & my family never have it on.
Now DD runs to me with the remote & dances in front of the TV, saying "me e" & trying to sing the mickey mouse clubhouse theme song. It is really adorable but I don't want her getting used to it.
How much is your TV on & do you have this issue with DH?

No, because we have a split screen feature and DH will use headphones to listen to his side of the tv while playing video games. I keep my laptop in front of his side of the TV so I don't even notice it.

Dh and his family are just like yours, and it drives me bananas! I'm not a tv person and i can't stand the tv being on for no reason. The AAP recommends no tv for children under the age of 2 (I believe), but if so it should be limited to one show per day.

I just tell my dh that I don't want our children developing ADD or vision issues. Even if the child is not watching the tv while it is on, studies have shown that this impacts their communication skills because the adults are too busy watching instead of interacting with the child.

Unless DS is watching a show, the tv is off in our house. He watched absolutely no tv until 19 months, and only after that when my morning sickness or exhaustion was really bad in the first trimester. Now he watches 1 or 2 shows every few days, and a movie about once every 2 weeks to a month.

No, we don't have any tv battles. DD has been watching tv since she was 3 months old (she is now 4yo) and has zero issues from watching tv. I personally think people go a little nuts with the no tv thing, in moderation it's not really a big deal. Truth be told, as much as DD enjoys watching her shows or a Disney movie if given the choice she will almost always choose a book, a toy, or drawing over just sitting and watching tv. I wouldn't sweat the whole tv thing too much but that's just me. Chat Icon

our TV is on all day since kids got home from the hospital, and we have no issues with it when it comes to the kids.
my DD would prefer to do crafts or play outside. my DS actually gets annoyed sometimes when the TV is on.

they are 5 & 3

Re: do you battle over the TV wih DH

We bought a house 4 months ago and have yet to put a TV in the main floor. There is one in the den/ basement nad another in our room. I keep that one on all night for me and on weekends bring DS into my room to hang out. It works for all of us. I also have wireless headphones I use when dh sleeps.

My sitter has th TV on the entire time she watches DS but its usually on a spanish news station.

Exactly this! Thankfully, my husband is much better about it now that we have kids. He watches all how stuff after they go to bed and never leaves it on for no reason.

This is how we feel too. I've always been home with the kids all day, so during that time I decide when the TV will be watched. When DH is home with us after work and on weekends, I'm not going to worry about the TV being on or off.

Re: do you battle over the TV wih DH

We have it on for most of the day but I never put cartoons on so my DS (14 months) doesnt pay attention. There are some days where I want background noise but on days when my DH is at work I may keep it off and enjoy the silence!

No battles here. I grew up with the TV always on and it's still on in our home now.
My kids will watch a show (especially Fresh Beat Band, LOL) and then go off and play.
I like to have it on. I like the noise of it.
I see nothing wrong with it.

Same. My 18m old is addicted to baby einstein. But he only gets it when we put it on and thats the only show he sits and watches. I dont mind it on as long as they are not just couch potatoes.

Both my boys (4.5y and 18m) are so used to it, its no biggie. THye will watch then run to the playroom, then come back etc.

This is us.

DD is 2 now and the tv isn't a big deal and we don't battle over it.

Re: do you battle over the TV wih DH

Our tv is always on when we're home. I need background noise. If it's just me and DD I usually keep it on the toddler music channel (she loves to dance and loves music). DD gets to watch about a half hour of tv a day maybe. Some days she doesn't watch tv at all. But when DH is home, the tv is a battle for us. He always has one of his shows on and he constantly zones out. He doesn't see DD as much, so I have actually turned the tv off on him so he had no choice but to pay attention to DD. He's ana amazing father, but he just zones out and needs to not be distracted.
