We did small. About 20 people in our backyard. It was great because I felt like my DS had fun, but so did I and I actually got to spend time with the guests.
We might have gone a little bigger if we'd had the money, but it just wasn't an option. From DS's perspective, I don't think he'll really care.
We did this. Honestly I went in with the keep it small mentality and it ended up bigger than I wanted. I am a fan of backyard or at home parties. Birthday parties these days get way too out of hand.

We did 'big' as in a lot of people - but kept it all very casual and low key. Sean's was in our backyard, and Colin's at Cedar Creek Park (which was a HUGE hit - and beautiful day thank god!)
I wanted the people there to all celebrate and have a good time together with us - I wasn't interested in spending a fortune on things that *I* feel are done just so everyone else can say "OMG look what THEY did !!" .....not important IMO, I'd rather take that money and put it toward something for our family.
But I'd NEVER skip the party !!

other - did you have a big welcoming party? (christening, etc)
If you did - then small party - immediate family at your house is fine
If you didn't go for the big party to welcome into the family
