food allergies
I gave my 5.5 month old DS some banana yesterday for the first time and this morning he woke up with a little rash on his face. It has gotten better but its still there. I am taking him to the ped at 3:30 but I guess I am just asking for advice and opinions. Is this an allergic reaction to the banana or does a small rash typically occur when new foods are introduced?? TIA!!

Re: food allergies
It doesn't sound like a food allergy... usually those would show up immediately.
It might just be sensitivity if there was dried food on baby's face or could be rash from excess drool even

Re: food allergies
Ds has a milk and egg protein allergy and gets hives or red dots around his mouth instantly when he eats those foods or foods with those items in it. It has never showed up hours later but you never know, Im not an allergy expert. If there was residue on is mouth then that could be a possibility or if he spit up a little over night and it stayed on his mouth.

It could be an allergy. It can take up to 24 hours for it to show. I would wait a few weeks and try it again..DS throws up and gets hives from soy but sometimes it takes 12 hours to happen.. Every kid is different

Yes, it can definitely take time to show up, which is the reason behind the 3 or 4 day wait rule between introducing new foods. An allergic reaction can take several days to show up. My older son was allergic to squash as a baby, which he tried for the first time at 9 months. He ate it, then shortly thereafter went down for a nap. Several hours later, he woke up with a little rash on his cheeks. The same thing happened the next day when we gave it to him again, that's how we knew.

My child had this reaction to bananas and it didn't usually show up right away. Sounds like its probably an allergy unfortunately!

This is not necessarily true. My allgerist told me a reaction can happen anywhere from minutes to many hours later. DH is allergic to crab and got hives and facial swelling about 10 hours after he ate it. My DD gets rashes or hives 2-3 hours later. It depends on the food and I believe how allergic you are as well. Although DH is pretty allergic to crab and his takes a while to come out.
My DD had something similar. It could be a few things. We think my younger one was allergic to apples. My ped said rashes around the face could be a contact allergy or sensitivity, could be from the acidity if it gets or sits on the face, and drool could do it too. What does it look like red only or more rashy.
