Washing cloth diapers for the first time
When you wash cloth diapers for the first time, do they need to be washed separately from other wash(i.e. I'm washing other baby stuff for the first time). I ordered 2 flip covers and organic inserts so I don't have too much to wash. Do I have to do them separately and how many times do I wash them before use?
ETA: do the covers and inserts need to be washed separately from each other and from other wash?

If you have natural fabrics like hemp they need to be washed separately and they need to be washed several times. I don't know what kind of laundry detergent you are using but not all are great for cloth diapers so that matters as well.

The inserts are cotton and the covers are laminated polyester. Do the inserts and the covers need to be washed separately? I will be using Ecos detergent which gets a good rating on the website talking about cloth diaper detergents.

cloth diapers should always be washed separately. Any oils or dyes or anything from other clothes can affect the absorption. Also, be careful what type of detergent you use... . Check the manufacturers' website to see how many times to pre wash them. Look on diaperswappers.com for some good info. mothering.com also has an extensive cloth diapering forum.

Re: Washing cloth diapers for the first time
I use Indian prefolds. i prep them before first use. this consists of boiling them about 6 at a time in a large pot with a squirt of Dawn dish soap. Then I wash and dry 2 times with no detergent to get the dawn out. Then wash one more time with Tide powder (about half the recommended amount on the largest wash setting) dry and they are ready to go. Covers I use Thirsties which is a PUL cover. I just toss them in the last wash of the prefolds and they are ready to go. I also dry them in the dryer but some people don't. As pp stated cloth diapers are to be washed separately from clothes. And make sure to never use fabric softener. It will form a buildup and your diapers will leak. Good luck!! I love using cloth I will never go back to disposable :)

Re: Washing cloth diapers for the first time
I called the company and they said to wash and dry the inserts 6 times with about a tsp of detergent and wash the covers about 6 times. I have a really small stash to begin with (2covers and 6 inserts) so I was trying to avoid a practically empty load but I guess I have no choice huh?
