Midwife/OB office drama am I overreacting?

the mid wife from my old practice just called
to ask why i was leaving
um, your front desk staff is rude, your lab tech is rude, your billing dept is misbilling me, you don't inform me of what my next appt is, and you ask me if this is my first pregnancy at every appt
she got defensive saying that the billing dept is supposed to charge for handling my blood bc it's a lab fee (um, that's why I pay a lab fee when you send the blood out) so I said no other place has charged me for that ever. Then regarding her repeating herself was that they are moving to an electronic system so even though she has a hard copy the electronic system is difficult to use. She said she would address the rudeness, but the fact that I am supposed to magically know what happens at each appt is still on the table. I never know if I'm going in for a sono, or something. This last visit they used a doppler. I had no idea wtf that was at all, nor was it discussed at the last appt that the next would be a "belly check" bc the appt before she just FELT my stomach. My mom wants me to see an OB and not a midwife so I'm just checking out this guy tomorrow.
also, I'm 17 weeks and haven't had a sono there since week 7. IDK if that's weird or not. I wish they would give me a printed out schedule of when things are done bc I feel really lost about it all. That's why dh and I went to baby imprints. We were getting anxious to SEE if everything was ok
OH and when I went there for my last checkup (which was at 13 weeks) she hurriedly asked us about the amnio and said if we wanted to do it we would have to hurry bc the last you can terminate a pregnancy is 14 weeks. First of all, we wouldn't terminate anyway. Second of all, WTF wasn't this brought up at the appt BEFORE this one? the whole office seems disorganized and hanging by a thread.

Chat Icon Chat Icon Sorry, again I don't know if I'm overreacting or maybe need my hand held a little more than most but to me a little communication goes a LONG way

i had some frustrations with my office too but they have gotten better. i now ask questions at each visit and get very informative answers - but ill admit if i didnt ask i would know nothing! As a FTM it is frustrating to not feel that the doctors want to keep you informed of things. but i love my doctor (have been seeing her for over 10 years) so i wanted to stick with her. now, i always ask what is going to happen at my next visit and what i should expect in my time in between appts and she takes her time to explain it to me.

i get billed lab fees so im not sure about that. i got a sono at week 7 and then the 12 week NT scan and was told if a normal pregnancy that is all they do until the 20 week scan so i dont think their office is out of whack on that policy. turns out they are concerned with my cervix length so i get sonos at every appt until 28 weeks but that is not typical.

what it comes down to is what YOU are comfortable with...if you arent happy there check out someone else! you shouldnt feel like you are stuck with this midwife just bc you started out with them. i hope they take your complaints seriously and change their ways for other patients. Chat Icon

I think it's best that you look for another doc or midwife that you would feel comfortable with. I'm surprised that she didn't offer you the option to do the NT sono and blood work at 12 weeks. I don't know if it's too late to do this but you can ask the OB when you see him. You should never feel obligated to use someone or uncomfortable...this is your pregnancy, your body and your baby. I would have reacted the same as you (but i have a short temper so probably earlier lol). Good luck! I'm sure you will find someone you love!!!!

I can't believe she was confrontational with you about your leaving! And to defend herself and her practice -- it's just uncalled for. People move on every day from one office to another for a myriad of reasons. You don't have to explain yourself and she should be happy you did! "I decided to pursue a different option for several reasons I'd rather not discuss" would've been perfectly fine!

Sounds like you're making the right move. Some places just aren't the right fit for some people. Better to know now than 20 weeks down the road.

Re: Midwife/OB office drama am I overreacting?

Who are/were you using? I had a midwife with DD and for this baby as well. If the pregnancy is proceeding normally, the sono schedule in both places was 8 weeks (dating the pregnancy), 12 weeks (NT scan), 20 weeks (anatomy scan), and that's it. Growth sonos are hit or miss with accuracy, so most midwives (and many obs) avoid doing them.

I'd be ticked at all the other stuff though. You're not overreacting there. Chat Icon And no matter what kind of practitioner you have, they're supposed to answer your questions!

eta: for spelling. It's hard to type with DD on my lap!

They aren't doing the NT scan till 18 weeks or so that much she told me because they have to give me a prescription to go someplace else. I see so many ladies here who have it done earlier and it doesn't add up.
Obviously if I have similar issues with the new doctor I'm going to chalk it up to it's me and I'm just paranoid

ummmm, craziness!

AND am amnio is NOT done before 16w. RUN. RUN. RUN. perhaps she was talking about CVS (done around 12w) but to not have that information straight is not acceptable.

what? NT is not done at 18w but betwen 11-13. They cannot get proper measurements at 18w. Did she mean the level II or Anatomy scan at 18w? That would make sense but there is NO way they are doing an NT at 18w.

I wasn't offered anything at my 13 week appt except the amnio to see if there were abnormalities.

For my 13 week appt I just had a doppler and she didn't mention anything prior about the NT at all.
Seeing all your replies are making me angry but justify the fact that I'm leaving.

at 18 weeks, they do the anatomy scan, and even that's slightly early. there's no way they can measure the neck thickness for the NT scan at 18 weeks, 13-14 is the latest. Run from that place!!

good thing you are leaving. they definitely sound a bit dysfunctional over there. NT scan can only done between 11 and 14 weeks, because that's when the base of the baby's neck is still transparent. it's a shame they haven't been giving you appropriate info, but hopefully you have much better luck at your new practice.

btw, you can always submit a complaint about this doctor to your insurance company. they keep records of stuff like that, and it can also help if your old practice starts incorrectly billing you.

Midwife/OB office drama am I overreacting?

Can I tell you that when I called the lab tech to ask her to add a panel as per my endo I couldn't even get the question out bc she was so rude. I've been with this midwife since I was 18, so I was hesitant to move but I've never liked her office staff

hold on a sec - did they mention anything about a NT Scan to you? generally they give you the option of the scan, even if you opt out of it.
I know that most regular OBGYN's will give youa sono to confirm a pregnancy. one at 20 weeks/anatomy scan and i think one more along the way. in between, theywill use a doppler to shear the baby's heartbeat.
I know i get way more sono's than normal since i'm considered "high risk" but they should still tell you wha tyou can expect at your next appointment. even if they don't, i would think that if you ask them that they would at least give you an answer.

If she mentioned the NT scan it may have been AT my 13 week appt but DH and I were so thrown by the idea of her talking (incessantly I might add) about termination that we blocked it out bc I just called him and he doesn't remember it either. Just something about getting a test to see if we wanted to terminate but that the scan at 18 weeks would also say whether there were issues with the baby. We both said we wouldn't terminate either way so she said that we would have a scan at 18 weeks (somewhere else bc they don't do it there) and would find out then.

I now I may be suffering from baby brain but I know that nothing was said prior to the 13 week appt about anything bc she was ready to rush us off bc she had apparently forgotten to offer it sooner.

Why why why would she keep suggesting termination!!! That annoys me the most. I definitely agree with the other posters....please run...far and FAST from that office. Don't look back!!

What upset me most beyond all of the other issues was at every single appointment she asked if this was my first pregnancy. I have been with this woman since I'm 18 years old and had my first and only miscarriage under HER care. She just seems to be missing the sensitivity chip.

If you aren't happy there for any reason then you should switch to a new doctor. Trust your instincts and don't worry about over reacting. I switched around 20 weeks and am soooooo happy that I did.

Midwife/OB office drama am I overreacting?

I left my OB at 19 weeks because of similar issues, rude staff, crazy long waits, no return calls, not gettign proper info. Let me tell you that once you have a good Dr you will see how wonderful the experience can be. My OB that deleivered DS is the best....I wanted to cry after I gave birth cause I knew I wasn't goign to be seeing everyone all the time.

Switch Drs. A pregnancy is not the time to have an OK Dr.

It sounds like she wasn't explaining things to you clearly. They cannot do an amnio at 13 weeks. The earliest it can be performed is 16 weeks. The NT scan is generally performed between 11 and 13 weeks. If you choose something more invasive, the CVS test can be done between 10 and 12 or 13 weeks. The Level II anatomy scan is performed between 18 and 20-22 weeks.
