Dentist for 13 month old?

I just read, dentist visits start around the 1st birthday Chat Icon DD is 13 mo and has 8 teeth...

When did you start taking your LO to the dentist AND where do you go???

I live in the Dix Hills/Deer Park area (not far from Commack and E.Northport).

TIA!

DD is 2.5 and I haven't taken her yet. My ped told me that if you ask a dentist, they'll say to start taking her at 1 year old, but if you ask a pediatrician, they'll say 5, so we're going to do it at 3.

I asked my pediatrician around a year...and she said, "What they do at a year...I couldn't tell ya."

She advised we wait until DD is older (I forget if she said 3 or 5). She said if there is a problem, she'll send us, she checks her mouth every time we go to a wellness visit.

Dentist for 13 month old?

I am bringing DS right after his 2nd bday in a few weeks. The ped dentist I bring DD to said 2 is a good age to start to get them used to going. From what I know they are going to just count his teeth, check for cavities and try to clean them. I've been trying to work with DS looking in his mouth and not having him bite me so he doesn't do it to them!!

Dentist for 13 month old?

Our ped recommends 2. I've heard and read that most regular dentists won't see a child until around 5, which is why it is recommended to go to a pediatric dentist before that.

Dentist for 13 month old?

DS went at 1, but they didn't do anything.
We see kids between 3 and 4. It's more to just make sure everything is OK and to get them used to see dentists.

Re: Dentist for 13 month old?

I'm surprised by some of these responses. I can't imagine waiting until 5 years old. Many kids could have cavities before then. Pediatricians aren't dentists, so how would they even know what is/is not a problem? It's better to get them in early, get them used to the process, make sure their teeth are coming in correctly, etc. Our ped said when they get a tooth they should go. We went to a pediatric dentist at 18 months, they cleaned and counted, and we have gone every 6 months since.

Re: Dentist for 13 month old?

I defy ANY dentist to be able to check my 2 yo Dd's teeth. Go ahead. Try it. I laugh at the thought.
And at 1 year old she had NO teeth. As in zero.
So I doubt that recommendation applies to us.
I will go when I see fit.

Dentist for 13 month old?

I can't even get 18m DD to put a toothbrush in her mouth, let alone even think about seeing a dentist.

I have seen many 4-5 year olds who need a root canal or have a few cavities, so I definitely agree that the kids should go when they are 1.5-2.
Pediatricians aren't dentists and don't check kid's teeth for cavities.

Re: Dentist for 13 month old?

Both my ped and my dentist said to bring them in at 3 for a real visit, but at 2 to get used to seeing the dentist/that it is a nice place to go. If there is an issue that you see before then, I would absolutely take your child in (i.e. teeth not coming in, not coming in straight, over crowding, discolorations).

Dentist for 13 month old?

I might consider taking my DD to the dentist when she's 2 but I can't possibly imagine taking her now when she's a little less than 18 months. She won't even let me get near her mouth, I can't imagine someone who is a stranger in an intimidating environment like a dentist's office.

When I asked my dentist, she said he wouldn't need to go Neil 3. He'll be 14 months tomorrow and only has 2 teeth, so there's no reason right now!

Dentist for 13 month old?

I just asked my dentist last week when kids should start seeing the dentist ( he is also a ped dentist). He said it depends but generally at around 3 they like to have the child come in and explore the place and then if they feel comfortable/not afraid he will take a peek at their teeth.
