Is not having stranger anxiety normal?

DS is 18 months and has never ever had stranger anxiety. Just today, my sister and her boyfriend came over and he's spent just a few times with my son, DS was wanting him to hold him and trying to hug him.

He's been meeting his milestone, although he was born prematurely. He says words, understands everthing etc.

Is this a problem?

Re: Is not having stranger anxiety normal?

I have no clue really, just chiming in, I have a friend with a son who is now 4, who has zero stranger danger his entire life, but performing above average in everything.

Maybe its just a personality trait, when everything else in normal? But she got it checked out because she's got degrees in child education, and he checked out normal. So why not, if its free, and easy enough to do, just get him checked out.

I don't think of it as a milestone, but more a personality thing. Both my boys are very friendly and sometimes go to anyone. Sometimes they stay by me too, but always pretty much friendly. Even today a stranger came to the door and my 14 month old reached out his arms for the guy to pick him up. Other times he won't go to anyone else or he's attached to my mom or mother in law. Depends on the mood, time of days if they napped, etc.

Thank you. I shouldn't have said milestone, I guess I mean "expected" behavior. If we're in the supermarket people are always smiling and waving at him and he usually smiles back and waves. Sometimes he'll act "shy" and nestle up to me. For the most part if there's someone newer at our house hes not afraid at all and wil go right up to them. After reading online (which I know is a bad thing to do!) I feel like he's supposed to be running and screaming at the sight of strangers and if he's not he's got a social issue.

I think this is just personality, some babies are more wary and some are super friendly.

DS never had any stranger anxiety until he hit around 22 months.. I was floored! I thought it would never happen.. he's 26 months now and it's not as bad.. but it was definitely a stage he went through.

Re: Is not having stranger anxiety normal?

My boys are almost 6 and 2.5 and neither of them have ever had stranger anxiety. In fact I've had to tell them numerous times that it's one thing to be friendly and say hello (because they will say hi to anyone) but just because you say hello does not mean you know the person- that person is still a stranger. They're just friendly kids. We have a lot of family and friends o I think they're jst used to being around a lot of people.
