Airplane with 1 year old
We will be travelling when DS is 1...do we need to buy a separate seat? Can he sit on our laps? Not realy sure how this works. Is it better to try for a late or very early flight when he will be sleeping? Its probably going to be a 4 - 5 hour flight.

You can sit him on your lap until the age of 2. I used to fly around nap time at that age. Always worked out great. Bring a paci or a bottle for take off and landing to help with the ear pressure.

Agree with above poster.
Also bring along snacks and a new toy your DS hasn't seen yet so he's fully engaged in it. Maybe your iPad/portable DVD to watch a show. I do anything to ensure a nice flight for everyone!!!!

I agree with the pps - close to naptime or as early in the day as possible - there are less likely to be delays.
We flew to AZ when DS was 1 - the way there was challenging but, the way home was a breeze (and the challenging part had to do with something unrelated to the flight).

We took our daughter when she was 10 months old and sat her on our lap. We had a flight around 10 in the morning because it was around nap time. She actually did sleep most of flight.

We fly relatively often and we haven't bought a ticket for DD yet, but I have a feeling I will on her next flight. She was 14 months the last time we flew. I prefer to fly very early in the morning or close to morning nap time 9:30 and late in the evening. DD is a pretty good napper and sleeper and she has always fallen asleep on the 9+flights we have taken. The only rough flight we have had was an early afternoon flight and she just wanted to walk around and see as much as she could. I really think snacks, new toys, and cell phones are great distractors. DD doesn't really have the attention span for the Ipad or DVD's, but she loves playing with our cell phones and looking at pictures on there.

Re: Airplane with 1 year old
We fly to AZ often to visit MIL since DS#1 was 5 months. There is no way that I wouldn't buy a seat. 4-5 hours is a long time to be holding a squirming child.
disclaimer - I have never held them on lap, but every time we fly I appreciate the seat.
