Advice needed for getting my 2 yo to bed

My DS shares a room now with his 10 mos old sister. He is in a toddler bed (since beg of summer) and for the most part sleeps through the night. At times he comes creeping in and depending on the time, I either bring him back to his bed or let him stay with us so he does not wake her up. I have a cape, so I don't want him upstairs by himself yet. Anyway, he is quite annoying at night wanting me to stay with him until he falls asleep. If I leave to attempt for him to fall out (i.e., excuses to go to bathroom, etc.), he is out of the bed. Again, I don't want her to wake up. he's ok if I transfer him if he falls asleep in my bed, or if we are in car during bedtime. There is a nightlight in there already. Any suggestions?

Re: Advice needed for getting my 2 yo to bed

My advice is do NOT give in to him because it will start a routine and you will be miserable -

My parents babysat my kids while DH and I went on vacation for a week last March - My Mom laid in bed w/ my 3 year old every night to get him to sleep - we NEVER had to do that before and he never asked/expectied it .......Well, guess who had to do that until just ths past week when we finally (almost) broke the habit? I'd never tell my Mom it was HER who started all of this, she did me a HUGE favor letting me go on vacation, but I secretly wanted to strangle her!

If it's not something you're willing to do every night (some people are, I, HATED it b/c I ended up passing out at 9:00, having zero time to myself or w/ DH) I thinki you should put up a safety gate in front of the door, but leave the bedroom door open - Maybe put a brighter nightlight on after they fall asleep so if he wakes in the middle of the night he's not scared?

you'd be surprised re: the baby sleeping through it. Colin's room is directly across the hall from Sean's and I leave both of their doors open at night - Sean woke Colin ONCE and it was only b/c he wasn't in a deep sleep yet.

Good Luck!
