A WWYD? Pregnancy & vacation related

So, I am 11 weeks PG with DC # 2. This morning, MIL calls me and says she and FIL want to take all of their children and grandchildren to Disney for their 50th wedding anniversary. There are 5 children and 16 grandchildren!!! That is so generous of them and it would be such an amazing time. They want to get each individual family a suite at the Animal Kingdom Villas, for a full week. The problem is, it has to be during a school vacation week since a lot of the grandchildren are in school, the oldest is a senior in high school. Christmas week is to soon and to hectic, and I will have a 2-3 week old baby during spring break. So that leaves winter break. I will be 34 weeks PG. Everyone else would fly, we would drive. Because DS will only be 21 months, we don't have to worry about school. So we would leave on a Friday morning, drive until night, stay overnight somewhere, and continue on Saturday. The rest of the family is flying in Saturday morning. Then Saturday, we will drive and arrive back in NY on Sunday. Would you do this 6 weeks before your due date? I know I wouldn't go on any rides, but DH could take DS on stuff. Another option is to have DH and DS fly down alone and I stay behind, but I would be so sad if I missed his first time in Disney. Chat Icon MIL said she will not do it if we can't go because she wants all of her children and grandchildren there. I don't want me to be the reason everyone else is disappointed. Maybe I should let the 2 of them go alone. Chat Icon I just don't know what to do!!!

That's a tough one. I drove down to NC at 33wks w/#3, but it was only a 10 hr drive and when I was down there mostly all I did was lay my pregnant ass in a lounge chair. Chat Icon

Well, I wouldn't send my DH and son alone. I'd be too sad and also what if something happened... No, that would be out of the question for me.

Although the weather will probably be agreeable in Feb, thre's a TON of walking in Disney and I think that would be difficult.

Hmmm...could they make it a "51st Anniversary" celebration?

I wouldn't, but I also had a very difficult pregnancy and only made it to 30 weeks. Could everyone do it in the beginning of the summer?

If you have an uncomplicated pregnancy and you had one with you DS I would do it. I would just be honest that you may need to relax more and not be as involved in every single activity. It might be nice for DH and DS to go off and you can read and nap. Since you'll be driving you can take breaks and rest whenever you want/need.

I would plan to go. I exercised throughout my pregnancy and felt great through the ninth month. I taught my high school classes and worked up until the day before I gave birth. I felt great! If your pregnancy is anything like this Disney will be no problem.

Animal Kingdom Villas are fantastic!! We've stayed there twice using our DVC. If the Disney parks get to be too much you can relax on your balcony and watch the animals and meet everyone for dinner. February weather is great for touring as well. Go and have fun!

I know you said Xmas break is too soon, but is it? I would push for that, even do some of the planning and leg work to make that happen.

I wouldn't do it. You never know. GFB you do go into labor, you will want your Drs. And if you don't go, you miss out like you said and also, your DH will need to rush back. Can they wait til the summer?

Thanks everyone for your input. Christmas break is out of the question because some travel to see other family for the holidays. I guess summer would be an option, but it would have to wait until late June/early July when the older kids are out of school. I am not sure I want to be in that kind of heat with a 2 yr old and a 3 month old. I had a picture perfect pregnancy with DS, no preterm labor. I never even went into labor on my own, I was induced at 41 weeks. I know every pregnancy is different, but so far this PG is picture perfect as well. In my heart, I really want us to go. Because DS is so little, we won't do everything, because we know we eventually want to go back. So I would be able to take it easy, maybe even skip the parks a few days and take DS in the pool. I am going to the doctor next Monday for my 12 week appt. and I will ask him his opinion. Thanks again!!

Re: A WWYD? Pregnancy & vacation related

No I wouldn't and I also had 2 uncomplicated pregnancies. There are a list of reasons why I wouldn't! I would also be surprised if your Dr. said yes to this.

Honestly, I think they are being unfair to you. They have left you with a lose-lose decision. They are accomodating everyone else but you. Let them take a local trip now and wait a year to do this - then it can be enjoyable for everyone.

going along for the ride...

Why wouldn't you do any rides there are plenty of things you can do pregnant at disney. Most likely you won't be able to do things your 21 month old can't do either. Things like haunted mansion, its a small world, peter pan etc are all okay to ride.

I woukd say the bigger concern would be if you can do all the walking that would entail (although you could rent a wheelchair). I would be more concerned that late that you might be uncomfortable. How did you feel at 34 weeks with your 1st DC? I was on bed rest with DD#1 but not with DD#2. In fact I went to the bronx zoo a few days before I had DD#2. I don't think I could have done it for a week. The good news is with a 21 month old you will want to take a midday break which will help you. I think you can do it but will have to make plans for lots of breaks and lots of water if it is hot.

Is there a reason you don't want to fly? Will you feel up to a long car drive that far along?

I would consider it but I would have a plan if you are tired or uncomfortable. You can definitely do several rides which are the ones most appropriate for a 21 month old anyway. There are lots of shows. Plan to fastpass a lot. Also get insurance in case you can't go for some reason.

Ask your doctor. Mine said no trips more than 2 hours away from the hospital at that point in my pregnancy.

Id try to get the trip pushed back. It's hard to coordinate so many people... BUt personally, I wouldn't Go.

A WWYD? Pregnancy & vacation related

I flew to San Antonio at 34 wks... Why cant you fly?

And I walked all over the Riverwalk area in 109 degree heat. I was kinda determined, swollen cankles and all. Then drove 2 hrs to Dallas for a family wedding. Then flew back home.

Do it!!!

I guess I could fly. I was just under the impression I wouldn't be allowed to at that point. I felt wonderful at 34 weeks with DS, but I know every pregnancy is different. I went to a wedding for DH's co worker at 39 weeks and danced the night away. I know walking through Disney is different though.

Re: A WWYD? Pregnancy & vacation related

Could they push it off for a few months so the new baby could go to ?? -
Not like that would be ideal either, but I think it may be a bit more do - able for you than 34 weeks PG.

I think if yoiu fly it would be fine.
I am just thinking about sitting in a car for 2 days w/ a baby while PG .......I'd be a misearable witch - LOL

Honestly it is not ideal and I wouldnt put that stress on myself if I were you. I would probably just stay home and enjoy some peace and quiet. Unless they would consider doing it at christmas time.

Re: A WWYD? Pregnancy & vacation related

If, I were going to go at 34 weeks, I'd rather fly than drive. FWIW, SIL flew to CA at 34 weeks and had no issues.

I was on bed rest with my first pregnancy starting at 1 month before my EDD, but had a much easier second pregnancy. I worked until my water broke. At 34 weeks, I was starting to get pretty uncomfortable though and had frequent BH contractions. I had swelling and would not want to walk around an amusement park.

I honestly think this sounds crazy. I had a totally uncomplicated pregnancy and felt good till the day I delivered, but this isn't one night out like the wedding you described, but a whole week of walking and activities. Even with flying, which sounds like a better idea than driving to me, would be really overwhelming. If they are insisting on going this year I'd choose summer over 34 weeks pregnant. If it gets too hot you could always take a break inside with the infant and your toddler. However, I'd probably try and push for next year.

That said, talk to your doctor too because my doctor isn't overly cautious told me he wouldn't advise traveling to TX for Christmas (I'll be 33 weeks).

Ditto...

I'd go, and probably fly. The weather won't be miserable like it is over the summer. Lots of other people will help chase your DS if you need to sit.

Re: A WWYD? Pregnancy & vacation related

Based on how I felt at 34 weeks, I would go! But I would fly since I still have nightmares about driving to disney with my familiy as a little kidChat Icon

it really is a case by case thing though. My SIL would've never gone but she felt AWFUL for most of her pregnancy and would've been miserable. I think her doc told her to stay close to home by that time too.

I think id go with the baby at 2/3 weeks. I'm crazy tho. Otherwise I'm with the others, wait until Summer break. Disney isn't going anywhere.

I felt fine at 34weeks was traveling to and from the city on the LIRR then taking a subway to a client's office and walking up 90+ (no elevator or escalator at that stop) in the middle of the summer heat of July/August. However it was around then that I had those sharp pains in my hip that would slow me down (sudden and sharp).

I too would push for Xmas break tho. So pretty and weather is so nice. Otherwise push for next year.
