Going to montauk in a week with 5 month old...sun protection?
Will be going to Montauk in a week with DD. she's never been to the beach and I don't plan to keep her out too long, What do you recommend for sun protection? She's still too young for sunblock according to pediatrician. I have a hat, but should I get one of those tent things? I'm thinking the umbrella won't be good enough with the reflection off the sand and water.

Our Ped told us to use baby sunblock, just to test a small spot before we put it on her entire body. He said he would rather us use sunblock then the baby get a sunburn.
I also bought a small tent off amazon for about $25

My ped told me the same thing when dd was an infant. He said it was best to keep her out of the sun altogether but if I was worried that she would accidentally still get some it was ok to use. I like babyganics .. No chemicals.
We had a baby tent and it was great.

Personally I would spot test with a baby sunblock (inside of elbow, behind ear or back of knee, as I've been told those are the most sensitive spots) if there was no reaction I would use it on exposed skin and give a bath asap after coming in for the day. I would also use a hat, and try to cover her up as much as I could with light cotton clothing.
She's 5 months, not 5 weeks. They say 6 months is okay, and she is so close, which is why I would personally make the decision I said.

I would use a sunscreen like Badger, where zinc oxide is the only active ingredient and everything else is all natural. If you use traditional diaper creams then your LO has already been exposed to zinc oxide because that is the main ingredient. Zinc sits on top of the skin and isn't absorbed into the bloodstream like other chemical sunscreens....it is the safest option out there. To the PP, baby gains is a green-washed company. Their products are loaded with chemicals!!!

Best protection against the sun is a shirt.
DD wore a long sleeve swim shirt all summer with a hat.
We kept her in the shade under the umbrella. No sunscreen needed.

Mine told me the same thing. Last summer when my preemie was 3 months old I was going to the Bronx Zoo with out of town guests. I asked the ped and he told me the same thing as the above poster...and that was with a preemie! Personally I felt MUCH more comfortable that the baby's skin was protected and wouldn't get burned, then risking the burn and the pain of a sunburn for a 3 month old. I tested the lotion before and he was fine. At 5 months old, she is certainly old enough for it...she's 4 weeks away from 6 months, 4 weeks isn't going to make a difference.

Get her one of the full body SPF suits. One Step Ahead has them, and so does Giggle in the city.
