Re: beyond exhausted and losing it

DS was like that. He stopped at 6 months or so.
I know many mom's are against it, but we were big proponents of CIO at our house!

we didn't swaddle and DS was always free to move around. We would stay in the room with him until he fell asleep.
At 6months we started weaning him off his middle-of-the night bottle. that's when he started sleeping through the night.

DS was not a good day napper either. only way he'd nap was in the swing on high. i slept when he slept. who cares about the messy house or pile of laundry? sleep was so much more important.

on the weekends, DH would take DS to see my in-laws for the whole day. it gave me a chance to relax and catch up on work and re-energized me for the week.

Let DH help out during the evenings and mornings! DH has the 5 am wake-up with DS so I can sleep until he leaves for work. Thise few precious hours are so helpful!

Consistency is key. Many babies thrive on a schedule. My twins do.

He needs to be put down for a nap at the same time every day, and at his age its at least 2 naps if not 3 naps. If the swing isn't working, ditch it - put him down for naps the same place and the same way you put him down for bed at night.

Sleep begets sleep.

Better naps during the day + earlier bed time = better sleep at night.

Also, ITA with those who said to let your DH help.

If you don't want him getting up in the middle of the night, then you NEED to go to bed earlier.

Take shifts with DH.

Let DH have some late night bonding with his boy while you catch some zzzzzz's.

Go to bed at 8 or 9. Let DH do the last feeding and put him down to bed. This way you'll have a good solid chunk of sleep if he wakes up in the middle of the night.

Good luck.

And remember ... this too shall pass!

Agreed to everything Jess said. I also would start cereal, like yesterday. It was a godsend for us. And the NICU doc was FINE with it....my ped, no so much. We started when my boys were 4 months (2 months actual) and it was like a light switch. They slept thru the night at 5lbs!

Schedule, schedule, schedule. I can NOT stress this enough. I would make it a 12 hr schedule at 4 months. 8pm last bottle, do your routine, shut the lights and leave. if they cry for more than 10 min. go in put paci back in mouth, leave. repeat.

DO CIO as soon as you feel comfortable.

Before they STTN we did shifts.
this was our from 1-4 months
830: dh would go to bed
11/12m: last feeding, i did. and went to bed.
3ish: DH did
6ish: i did

So we both got 6/7hrs of uninterrupted sleep.

I know it feels like there is no light, but I promise you there is. There will come a day when this period of your life will seem like a MOMENT. THIS TOO SHALL PASS. I promise.

When your lo STTN you will feel like a totallyyyy different person. That is when i really started to "enjoy" my twins and not just feel like their slave

Re: beyond exhausted and losing it

sorry u are going thru this.....my first was a difficult baby and i know it could be rough.

Not sure if this was mentioned..but another little tip, if u are not doing this already is to make sure u keep everything VERY dark in the middle of the night..i find that helps keep my daughter in sleep mode and she almost always goes right back down.

Good luck!!!!!

Try putting him in the crib! At 4 months my daughter was in the rnp and waking up a lot. I put her in the crib and she sleeps so much better!

I also second the crib thing!
I was so worried that putting her in the crib would make her sleep worse, so we kept putting it off.
Once we did though, I was amazed!
She slept SO much better.
It was almost like she was too confined in the RNP and in the crib she had much more room to stretch out.
Within 2 weeks of the crib, she was STTN.

Definitely try an earlier bedtime and a nap routine. He might just be overtired.
