Dairy Free LOs - what do you feed them!?
I was really hoping DD would grow out of her dairy allergy, but we tried out yogurt again yesterday and it was a major fail. Night waking and diaper rash. She is 12mo. If your LO has a dairy allergy or intolerance, what do you feed them? What kind of milk do you give them?
DD is a skinny mini, and I was really hoping to get some calories in her with milk products. I am also wary of giving her too much soy. She is getting tired of baked fruit and steamed veggies, but I am an AWFUL cook, so what are quick, easy meals that are dairy free? (sadly I am in a small town in NC, so we don't have any Whole Foods, Trader Joes or the like here. Closest one is maybe 2.5 hours away).
TIA!

Re: Dairy Free LOs - what do you feed them!?
Well DD is older (now 5) but we found out when she was 3.5 almost 4 that she was allergic to milk (actually she was probably allergic for a while but they kept saying she was lactose intolerant - even the allergist was surprised to get a positive on the milk).
She eats a variety of things: lots of fruits and veggies pizza (just crust with fresh tomatoes or tomato sauce that I make, with veggies or ham or chicken diced- no cheese - they do make a daiya vegan cheese but she doesn't like it) chicken drumsticks - usually plain but sometimes I will put some bbq sauce or some sauce that I make for her (marinade) but 90% she eats them plain hummus with crackers peanut butter sandwiches or with apples cheerios oatmeal made with water or soy milk turkey meatballs (I make them the same as I used to just omit the parmesean cheese - so egg, breadcrumbs, parsley, and I brown them in a pan - then add low sodium organic chicken stock and either cherry tomatoes or can of organic diced tomatoes and you cook them through in the broth Stir frys - diced chicken breast, broccoli, onion, string beans, diced carrots sometimes I put in pasta or rice Ham or turkey sandwiches (applegate farms is preservative and casein free) DD (both my 3 and 5 like this) likes a mock ceasar salad that we make with homemade croutons - I mix mayo, lemon juice and garlic together with a little olive oil to thin it out. Add diced chicken for a meal. I take strips of flattened chicken breast and dip it in soy milk and then into breadcrumbs - then cook in a pan so you have chicken fingers. Slice potatoes thinly and brush a little olive oil, some rosemary or other herbs then cook in the oven and you get crispy potatoes like chips. Bananas with a little honey for treats we make pancakes or waffles once in a while with soy milk golden oreos for treats
Etd to add - DD is allergic to milk, chocolate, oranges, strawberries and shellfish. So I understand how hard it can be. It was trickier for us because she did eat some things - for 3 years before she had the problem. But as I said they thought she was lactose intolerant for about 2 years - she would get bad stomach aches and mushy poops. Then she started complaining that it made her cough when she ate things with milk. We only recently have been able to allow her to have limited quantities of things that have milk baked into it (ie - gold fish, or a single cookie etc. If she eats too much she ends up with rashes on her face and a lot of stomach issues.)

Thank you! Some great ideas. I am introducing egg later this week (hopefully it goes ok), and then I am going to have DD try guacamole and hummus. Hopefully she likes them because I need some healthy fats in there!
