Peanut Free Lunches

My son is starting full day pre-k and the program is peanut free. I have no idea what is lunchbox friendly, that a picky 4 year old would eat. What kinds of foods does everyone send to school with your DCs if they go to peanut free schools? TIA!

Re: Peanut Free Lunches

I taught in a Pre-k that was peanut free....I would always suggest sunflower seed butter...it's a great alternative to peanut butter and I could almost guarentee that your lil one wouldn't tell the difference. Trader Joes makes a great one and it's cheaper in comparison to other stores :) Getting a thermos and making things such as soup, mini grilled cheese sandwiches, chicken nuggets, macaroni and cheese, spaghetti and meatballs, etc are always hits too. Good luck!

A lot of kids that have peanut allergies have tree nut allergies as well. OP, I would make sure other nut butters are safe before sending in something like this.

Re: Peanut Free Lunches

My classroom this year will be peanut free as I have 2 students with peanut allergies. I have seen my students bring in soup, grilled cheese, bagels with butter or cream cheese, chicken nuggets was a big hit in my class, sandwiches cut into fun shapes, pasta, lunchables, vegetables with hummus, pizza, yogurt, and fruit. I had a student that had a peanut allergy and he used to bring soy "peanut" butter and jelly sandwiches. HTH

This is my rec too. I'm allergic to most nuts and this stuff is an awesome substitute.

Re: Peanut Free Lunches

Definitely sunflower seed butter. TJ's raised their price a few months ago and now its not much cheaper there than every where else. $4.99 at TJ's and $5.69 I think at Whole Foods. Target is actually the most expensive place to get it, at over $6.00.

I eat it all the time and love it. My peanut allergic son (and his two sisters) eat it almost every day.
They also like bagels with cream cheese, cheese sandwiches.
