When to start potty training - boys?

DS is 2.5 - I've read a bunch of stuff online of course, but wondering from actual moms who BTDT. He can control his peeing somewhat like if we run to the potty (he's used the potty before, at around 2 it was a novelty and he was actually peeing on it alot and going #2 but that phase passed and I never trained or pushed it). Anyway, he's also hiding when he needs to #2. He will start nursery school in Sept. so I don't want too many transitions. Did you see more signs when your son was ready? Do i need him to ask for the potty before starting to train?

Re: When to start potty training - boys?

I agree with: If you start potty training before 3, they'll be ready at 3. If you start potty training at 3, they'll be ready at 3.

We tried a little here and there before 3, but it wasn't until he was 3 that he got what to do. He was potty trained fully in 2 days, 1 week after his 3rd birthday.

eta: We didn't see any signs, I literally took his diaper off one Saturday and asked him every 10-15 minutes if he had to go. By the second day, he was telling me when he had to go.

I'm curious about when to potty train also. DS is a few weeks younger than yours so I'm in the same boat. I'm thinking about going cold turkey and giving up diapers once the cooler weather hits (I'm thinking he will be apt to stay inside to use the potty rather than beg to constantly go outside, like right now).

Re: When to start potty training - boys?

we started at 2 and he was potty trained by 2 1/2.

we just broke out a potty and let him sit on it whenever he wanted. Then we let him sit on it naked and watch shows. No pressure. Then he started to learn the sensations and when he had to go. He started peeing on it here and there.

Finally he seemed ready. So we let him go around the house pantless for 3 days and told him he could pick out his own underwear at kmart if he didn't have any accidents by day 3.

he had 1 accident the first morning and that was it. Chat Icon

we started when my son was 2 1/4 because he said he did not want diapers anymore- he was trained within a few days with us but would not use the potty at school so we sent him in pullups- but he could control when he went - he is not night trained - he is almost 3 and we just took him out of a crib

We did the 3 day potty training method at 2 1/2 and it clicked with him right away. He pees and poops on the potty with no issues.

Re: When to start potty training - boys?

my ped said that based on his feedback from other parents, starting before 3 is a total crapshoot.

We started encouraging it at 2.5, pulled out the reward chart about 2 mos before his 3rd birthday, and he was completely trained by his birthday. I actually put a "just in case" pullup on him @ night, but it's never been wet. I think that's just my insecurity - I should put him in undies tonight!

Re: When to start potty training - boys?

I potty trained DS last month when he was 33 months. Did the 3 day potty training exactly the way it stated & he was fully potty trained by the first day - day & night.
He could have been trained earlier, but I kept holding off for summer & actually scheduled a weekend to plan to do it.

t!

I completely disagree with this. Children are capable and can potty train as early as 14 months! It's a matter of starting at the right time (not an age where they are stubborn or defiant), being consistent and patient, and not falling back on a diaper or pull up.

And no you don't need to wait for your ds to ask to potty. If I did that with my kids, they probably would not have trained until much later.

I recommend looking into the three day method as others have suggested. Good luck!

I tried at 2 - epic fail
I tried 2 1/2 - trained in literally 5 min. He never had an accident - I guess he was ready and we bribed him better LOL! He was dry overnight a few months later.

Re: When to start potty training - boys?

OKay I'm feeling better about this and I think with school starting in Sept. I will wait at least another month so he doesn't have too many changes. For those that did the 3 day potty method - I was looking it up - did u stick to it? Stay in ALL weekend, no bottoms for 3 months, etc.?

Same here, but DS was a little younger (26 months).

My friend had her little boy potty trained before 2 years old. She said that she started at 18 months and just went with it. She decided to try it before he got too much will power / be defiant and it really worked for her. I might give it a shot next summer when DS is 18 months old.
