Discipline and 1 Year Old
Do you discipline your 1 yo? My DS is 13 months and while he is an amazing little boy he likes to get into everything. When I say no and try to take him away from whatever it is he screams and goes right back to it. I try to just remove things that he shouldn't play with but, for example, he loves to open the drawers to our entertainment center and take everything out and then slam the drawer. I am just afraid that he is going to hurt himself by doing this but he will scream when I try to take him away. (Putting a child lock on the drawer is not an option). I try to tell him no you will get a boo boo but it really does not work. Any advice??

Re: Discipline and 1 Year Old
as soon as they started moving I started disciplining. I did not move anything in my house and have minimal baby proofing. I wanted DD to understand "no" for when we were in other peoples homes ect... I found consistency to work the best. I dont care if she screamed and cried - no means no- I do try to give an explanation of why I am saying no. Ex- no, the stove is hot, you will get a boo boo. so that it just wasnt NO and the word gets worn out. Consistency is key. Good Luck

We tried to childproof drawers in our kitchen and the locks must be pretty crappy because it just didn't seem to work. So my DD is always opening drawers but like the PP I just tell her NO and take her away from the situation.
She always throws a fit when I do it and cries, but I will usually then sit her on the floor and let her cry for a minute or two. Then I will tell her she can get up and come over to me and she will calm down and I will say again, "When mommy/grandma/daddy says NO, it's NO."
I know she understands some things and others will take longer but I just find that as long as I keep doing the same method of discipline over and over again it starts to work better.

I do say "NO" to things that could really be a danger (13M old DS), but I try to anticipate and just remove him from situations and then distract with something else. "No" loses it's potency if used too much, and I don't think they can understand a lot of explaining. At this time I try to make the environment safe for him. I get that they need limits, but they are also trying to explore and experiment, so it's natural they get into things. JMO

I live with my parents and they have porcelins (sp*) in the living room where DD can reach...she knows not to touch and no means no. consistancy is key as pp said HTH!
