Wearing an heirloom preserved christening outfit
DS might wear DH christening outfit. It was cleaned and "preserved" about 30 years ago. Should I wash it, or have it cleaned, before DS wears it?

Re: Wearing an heirloom preserved christening outfit
My DD wore mine and my mom just soaked it in washing soda to get the yellow out and then hand washed it gently. It came out like new!

Re: Wearing an heirloom preserved christening outfit
I would be nervous about what they felt was safe to "preserve" it with 30 years ago. I would definitely want to wash it.

Wearing an heirloom preserved christening outfit
mine was not preserved but it was used by my brothers and I - when i used it for my kids - what i did was took the bib and washed it with a little bit of oxy clean and water- then rinsed throughly- when that was ok for a few days - i washed the entire dress that way.

Re: Wearing an heirloom preserved christening outfit
DS wore one that was worn by every member of my family from cousins to my Mom. I think my BIL had it repaired and cleaned but, it was still yellowed. I got some magical yellow remover stuff and handwashed it and hung it dry. Then I steamed it. It was very delicate so beware. He wore it for the ceramony and was changed right away.

Re: Wearing an heirloom preserved christening outfit
I recently asked if I should preserve my DS's outfit if we planned on having more kids and the store owner told me that I shouldn't do that... but they may have wanted to sell more gowns.
How can you hand wash the outfits??? are they silk?

Thats what Im worried about.
Its not silk, I think its polyester. The tag says machine washable, but I think I will hand wash it in the baby detergent.

Re: Wearing an heirloom preserved christening outfit
I used my Grandmothers Christening Gown for DS. It is over 90 years old. All of My Grandmothers family were christened in it along with all 10 of my aunts, Uncles plus 40 Grandkids and 2 Great-grandkids so far. GG Child # 3 will use it shortly.
My Gran soaks it in starch before every use. It is in perfect condition and i love that it is a family heirloom.
