nanny help please

Today is DD's first day with a new nanny.

DD is 2 years old and was previously watched by my mom and her previous babysitter who we've had since she was born (so no adjustment period)

The new nanny was in a complete panic this morning when DD starting crying and didn't know how to handle her.

It's 9:30 and she's already called me that she can't get DD to stop crying.

She had 20 years experience as a nanny prior to this.

i feel like when I left today she should have been the one assuring me that everything was ok, and not the other way around but instead she is freaking out and I'm at work a mess.

I feel like DD is going to feed off her her fear and nervousness and she will never get her to calm down.

I had to tell her to take a picture of me & DH and let her hold it be she was crying for mommy.

She said she couldn't get her to eat, so I had to tell her not to force it and put cheerios in a bowl on the coffee table and a sippy with water and she will get it when she is hungry.

I told her I was potty training her and trying to get rid of the paci, but not to force anything these first 2 weeks bc she needed to adjust to her first and she took DD's paci away to try to get her to eat.

How can someone who is supposed to have 20 years experience not know these things?

Do I give up on her after today and look for someone else or give her another chance.

I'm so frustrated right now that I'm at work stressing about this when I shouldn't be.Chat Icon

She should know the key to this issue is distract, distract and distract. Can she take her out in the stroller or something?

I would be annoyed too, but not rush to let go of her yet. Was she at her last job a long time? She may be a little rusty in dealing with kids that don't know her and are having a little separation anxiety. I would just tell her you believe in her and to please just let you know if something serious develops. When you see her this evening I would just be honest with her and let her know how the morning affected to you and what your expectations are. Tell her that you expected XYZ....she needs to know and make tomorrow a better day.

Good luck. I completely understand your anxiety over this. I would be the same way. I am sure your DD is ok, and in a few days everyone will settle into their new routine.

Thanks. Chat Icon

I'm just annoyed that I selected her over a younger nanny because she had so much experience and worked for 5 years for a single dad. Prior to that she was with a family for 15 years and they had 6 kids ranging in all ages.

I was shocked that she was so unsure of what to do, and how to distract DD. I wrote down a list of all her favorite shows, showed her all of her favorite toys, and she just looked at me like a deer in headlights.

Re: nanny help please

Since she was with her previous employers for so long she might have been just as nervous as you.

Taking over a toddler is a hard job and there will be bumps in the beginning with anyone since toddlers react more to strangers than the little babies do.

Re: nanny help please

The nanny just called and said she's not coming back tomorrow.

The crying was too much for her.

My mother had to go to the house to let this woman go home.

I am so angry and stressed right now.

How can someone who claims to have 20 years experience with kids just give up after a day.

DD is 2 years old. Yes, she is going to cry. She is going to cry a lot.

That's CRAZY. Something is wrong with this situation. And it's not your DD. She's 2 and she misses her Mommy, she's going to cry. And then 3 days later she's going to love her new nanny and be fine. How does your nanny not know this?

So it worked out for the best. You don't want this woman watching your kid. I'm sorry you have to go through all the trouble of finding a new one now. I hope you had a good #2 choice?

Re: nanny help please

Did you call her previous employers to confirm her employment? A crying 2 year old can be a horrible experience for anyone especially if it is all day, but she should have been able to direct her attention away if she was so experienced!

yes. She had 3 very good references from her previous families.

I think she was probably with the families for so long that she may have been there from the time the little ones were born, and the other 2 families, the kids were a bit older (5+)

I'm so stressed right now.Chat Icon

Exactly. She should know that it will be a tough few first days but that it will pass. She is 2 years old, for goodness sake! What did this woman expect???

I had a decent #2 choice. I hope she is still available.
