when did you stop? I know not everyone does it, but I have and I'm just wondering how long people usually do it for.

I sterilized my nipples every day until 3 1/2 months. Not 5 minutes. Maybe 1 minute. I'm not sure if it's necessary up to that point though. Chat Icon I just was in the habit of doing it.

Re: Those who sterilized bottles and pacifiers...

Since "sterile" bottles and pacifiers are no longer sterile the minute they are room temperature, it seemed pointless to me, so we only sterilized brand new items.

I also only sterilize brand new items. My ped says you don't need to sterilize just hot water and soap, so I'm doing that

I only sterilized new items once and I would do all his bottles and such again if he had just gotten over being sick.

eta - not a cold, but like coxsackie and viruses.

Once a week until we stopped using them.
No matter how well you clean... Formula and milk is a great culture medium for bacteria. I got piece of mind to know at least once a week.... I'd kill most things.

I used clear glass bottles and would see a difference before and after.

Me too and for the same reason. I don't have a dishwasher and used Dr. Browns bottles, so I wanted to make sure all the parts were super clean. I bought the babies r us brand microwave sterilizer and it was quick, easy and I felt like it was totally worth it. DS was just about a year when we got rid of the bottles.

I sterilized until about 5 months. I used to steam or boil the bottles for five minutes.

ETA: I still sterilize the pacifiers about once a week by boiling them for five minutes.

My DD is just about 5 months and I am still sterilizing my bottles. I don't mind so much and know they are clean.

I sterilize once a day. Of course i know it is not essential but i like the piece of mind that they are clean and there is no harm doing it. If we are away for a weekend i just use boiling water.

I use the microwave sterilizer after hand-washing. I don't mind it, to me it's just the place I keep the bottles. I was told by my ped to do it until DS is off the bottle.

I sterilized them everytime until DS was 6 months old. Probably do the same for DD.

Re: Those who routinely sterilized bottles and pacifiers...

I sterlized every day until DS was about 4 months.

From there I sterlized once a week - still do. DS will be be 2.

I just feel it helps give them a nice cleaning. We have the Playtex Ventaire bottle and the bottom has a rubber seal inside, that always look gross after a few uses. I like knowing that its getting cleaned properly.

Plus, he uses a pacificer and since he now controls where he puts them when he doesn't want them - I like the idea of them being thrown i n boiling water for a few minutes.

Re: Those who routinely sterilized bottles and pacifiers...

We sterilized all bottles and parts until we stopped using the bottles between 10-12 months.

We use powdered formula so we boiled water, filled up the sterilised bottles and put the nipples and caps on them and let them cool until we needed them and then we put the powder in them.

I did it out of habit, more and with the boiling water being put in them it just worked for us.
