Re: Difficult situation - how to handle..?

I would honestly try to find a way to make it work. They are entitled to take a vacation. That leaves you in charge of the office and leaves you in charge of finding child are for your kids. It would be the same thing as if you had a nanny who was on vacation- you would need to make alternate arrangements for the kids. As far as the dog goes, I don't think it's unreasonable for them to ask you since your mil watches the kids for free while you work. Yes, it will be a tough week, but I feel like you should do it. And your DH will have to step up in some way to lend a helping hand. Why don't you have the dog stay at your house so you don't have to stop by their house?

Re: Difficult situation - how to handle..?

That's the other thing. It's hard for me to have the dog here since I am in a complex and I have to take the dog far away from the house to walk him in a certain area. I can't leave the kids in the house, I have to make a trip of it everytime I need to walk the dog.

I agree that they are entitled to a vacation, but it should not be at my expense. KWIM? They should find a way to make it work for all. Not have me "suck it up" for a few days.

Re: Difficult situation - how to handle..?

Is there any way DH can be in charge of the dog and you can just handle the kids? Or can you bring the dog to the office so at least you can walk him around there?

I am trying to get DH to come home on his lunch to take the dog out. He is working that out with his job. That will resolve it a bit. I can't take the dog with me to work. I don't like handling the dog as is, there is no way I will put him in my car.

See how complicated this gets??

Re: Difficult situation - how to handle..?

If DH can do the mid day walk, maybe ypu can walk the dog before going in to work and on your way home. Have DH do lunch time and the evening. If your in laws are helpful to you, then I think you should try to be helpful back. No, it's not convenient, but I'm sure they appreciate it.

Difficult situation - how to handle..?

I'd probably try to make it work, by hiring a babysitter etc. I'm assuming that you are able to take a vacation and your FIL takes care of the office when you are gone, right? Your MIL needs a break like other nannies, etc, so it only seems fair.

I have to say though as a dog owner are they not expecting you take the dog home with you or have someone stay with the dog? It seems like a long time to leave a dog alone at home while they are away. I may be misunderstanding though, wasn't sure if you were taking the dog and having your husband let the dog out during lunch.

If I were you I'd probably try to explain to your IL that the dog may be better at a kennel or at a dog sitter's house. Honestly, besides for the dog thing I don't think they are asking too much, but the dog thing while would be a nice favor for you to do if you liked dogs, but considering that you don't I think it's too much to ask of you. I lived in an apartment with my dog and a baby it's not easy or fun to get everyone all packed up so the dog can go out, and she's my dog and I love her. I can't imagine doing it if I wasn't a dog fan.

Yes, but when FIL is in the office, he doesn't have the kids and a dog to deal with.
And when MIL is home with the kids, she doesn't have to answer the work phone or do emails.

They definitely deserve the vacation, but I just think it's a lot to expect me to do all by myself while they are away. They need to give a little somewhere and I don't know how to say it.

Re: Difficult situation - how to handle..?

If your DH can't come home at lunch to take care of the dog, what about hiring someone to come to your home twice a day to walk the dog? (Maybe a neighborhood kid or retired neighbor)? Probably cheaper than hiring a babysitter for the kids, and at least that gets something off of your plate ;)

Difficult situation - how to handle..?

IMO the fact that your MIL watches your kids for you for free while you work is really nice so I would find it in poor taste to turn around and refuse to watch their dog. I KNOW it is a lot to ask, but they do a lot for you.

If you feel it is too much then I would price out a kennel and a nanny for the days and see which is cheaper, if a kennel is cheaper send the dog there for the time they are away (if that is okay with them).

Either way it sounds like they help you out a lot so you should help them. Thats how I would feel if I were in the situation.

Re: Difficult situation - how to handle..?

Sorry, but MIL watches your kids for free, so I would deal with it. A kennel or sitter for 3 days is peanuts compared to what you would be paying for FT care if not for your MIL.
