What is your ideal age for a nanny?

I am currently looking for a full time nanny and I've listed on care.com and on sittercity.

I would say that 70% of the applicants are college age or a little older.

How do you feel about hiring a younger nanny?

Do you feel they have the experience and maturity to be good nannies?

I always hear that younger nannies are less reliable and may have other things going on in their life that would interfere with their commitment to the job (future college plans, boyfriend/best friend drama), etc.

If they don't have kids of their own, they are easily flustered by the more difficult parts of childrearing (tantrums, separation anxiety, crying, saying no, being firm)

But the older ones seem to know it all and not want to hear your advice or way of doing things.

anyone have any experiences to share?

Totally depends on the person. I had a great girl who was 23. She was very responsible, wise beyond her years, but was young enough to get down on the floor with them and play. I needed her 2-3 hrs a few days a week, she wasn't allowed to take them out, and for an hour of that time it was nap time. So I really wanted someone "fun" to come here and wear them out for meChat Icon If i was hiring full time, my needs would be different, but my top priority would remain. trustworthy.

It is so hard, good luck.

Either way I would suggest nanny cams.

i had a similar set up when ds was younger. 2-3 hours a few days a week. she was in her early 20's, and i got lucky bcuz she wasn't a party girl, was more cerebral & into academics. she wore him out with play & reading - they only went as far as the yard, sometimes for walks around the block in his buggy...but the biggest thing to me was the trust factor. found her on sitter city, but have not found another one comparable to her in the last 6 months. each & every one has flaked out on me. it's hard. i liked the more "seasoned" ones, but they were really set in their ways, that it made me think twice about it.

I agree with the above poster. I feel like the older ones would be more set in their ways, and maybe even feel like as a young and new mother I didn't know as much as they did. I feel like I could give more direct instruction to a younger girl. I don't use nannies, but if I did I would look for a younger girl. Someone told me (regarding a babysitter)...."You need a high school or college nerd".

Agreed. My nannies have all been in their early 20s and have been great. I fear an older nanny would think she knew best...

Re: What is your ideal age for a nanny?

I specifically searched for someone over 45 years old - and got just what I wanted. My nanny is 51, and is everything I needed (but didn't know I'd need!).

She does have opinions and offers them when I ask, but always asks me for direction on what I want if it's a "new" situation.
