Re: "Hard Times: Lost on Long Island" was on HBO last night
Just watched this and it scared me. We are inn a good position now, but it just makes me want to save more and not upgrade our house, etc.
DH is adamant that we are able to afford all monthly expenses on one salary and I'm always pushing him to go over a bit since we both work. I told him this show totally changed my opinion!

All 3 didn't show up? What kind of business is it? Unless it's a highly specialized industry, that doesn't sound like what others I know are experiencing in hiring on LI. If you're having that difficult a time filling positions that people who are hired don't even show, maybe you need to look at your hiring/interview process and your job listings because it sounds like the applicants you're getting are bottom of the barrel. Or, even payment/benefits may need to be adjusted.
This remark really got me heated. Bottom of hte barrel? adjust the pay? We have tried many different approaches, we have a brand new office that is 2 years old we don't work in a dungeon. YES people don't show up!!!! Thats the reality
You're getting heated for no reason then. You said yourself that people don't show for interviews and that 3 people you HIRED didn't show up for their first day of work. Your statement: "I have hired 3 people recently and their start date was monday and they never called or anything, just never heard from them." makes it sound like ALL THREE didn't show up on the same day to start.
Unless the work you're asking them to do is horrific, that's not a good track record, IMO. And yes, maybe your talent pool is the bottom of the barrel, that doesn't mean YOU are. People who don't bother to even give the courtesy of a phone call to reject the job they're scheduled to start are trash, period. Three people all not showing up on the same start date is problematic. Your potential interviews not showing up. It really sounds like there's a problem with your talent pool. You say it's specialized and requires a certain set of skills that you can't get from schooling, that leaves you with 2 options: Bring in talent willing to learn from scratch or hire people who've had experience elsewhere. Maybe the incentives to work for you over company X aren't there in terms of salary/benefits, especially if you're competing against a larger company.
There are GOOD people out there looking and not getting calls. One of my former coworkers is looking, she's in accounts payable. She has over 10 years in with our old job, is reliable, has a degree and has plenty to offer. NO CALLS. A friend in IT, missing a degree but has plenty of work experience and training to supplement it. No interest in him. He went back to work this week by being rehired by a former employer who had an opening. No calls from anywhere else, not even for interviews. Even when I looked for a short time before leaving LI, I got no calls whereas 5 years prior my phone was ringing off the hook.
I will never understand why employers can't /won't step outside of the current talent pool/set of qualifications/requirements and take a chance on someone who doesn't have the cookie cutter skills needed but has a strong work ethic and is capable. Unless it's a job where a certain credential is required of course. (like a Dr or lawyer, RN, social worker etc) I have watched resumes get tossed for the silliest things. No degree (really, I do medical billing, it's not rocket science) or no certification (can be obtained relatively easily), no experience in office work yet a history of employment with high level responsibilities, name(yes, I had a manager who would toss resumes straight from the fax if she couldn't pronounce the name), schooling (one place I worked, the manager would toss resumes from graduates of certain schools), lack of schooling, current employer, too long a work history (ageism)... and my favorite: OVERQUALIFIED.
I have to say I'm a recruiter, and I have trouble getting people in for interviews. I advertise on quality websites, use word of mouth and read every resume that comes across my desk. I don't even look at names on the resumes. I have key words I look out for and go from there. I have had people not show up for interviews, come in late, laugh at the pay (which, I assure you is competitive). THe problem is that people have an expectation of a job that just isn't always reasonable. I had someone come in for a position that was not related to their previous position but yet wanted the same pay. That's not reasonable. I always have at least three job openings in my facility, and my time to hire averages about 28 working days. Every single one of my managers is willing to train someone who is reliable, responsible and willing to do the work. But let me tell you, those people are far and few between.

Re: "Hard Times: Lost on Long Island" was on HBO last night
My mom was out of work for a long time, finally found a job. But she had a very hard time
She was always early to interviews, always dressed appropriately, always sent a letter to thank them for their time
She has 20 years in the field, but no college so many didn't want her
She was making a nice salary, many of these places were not offering this amount. She was fine with that, she wanted to work and make money even if it wasn't what she WAS making. Many companies didn't want her bc of this. They would question why she would be willing to take less $, some even said they thought she would leave as soon as she found so e place willing to pay her more.

It's tough. My agency just had to hire someone for a new position and the Director was agonizing all day yesterday about who to offer it to. So many ppl interviewed who were qualified.
And I know it doesn't pay what it should, and comes with a lot of responsibility.
I think when I left yesterday she was leaning to hiring someone a little older, because she felt that they would be more stable in the position.
You never know how an employer is going to think.
