DS has the pool and the push buggy posted above and he loves them both. He also received a gazillion bubble machine, one of those cars couches that folds out, a step 2 slide, melissa & doug band in a box, the little people wheelies raceway, a water table from step 2, and a radio flyer wagon.

i love educational gifts. toys are so overated 
not sure if it is in your budget, but how about a red wagon?

One of those wagons that doubles as a bench
My little guy has a fisher price zoo animal alphabet mat that he loves
Water table ( get one meant for older kids )
Nonef these are really unique or creative but I know they'd get a ton of use
Eta: got one! There's a company called I see me where you can get a book made with the munchkins name. I got one as a gift and wound up buying one for someone else
