I realize that I'm not answering your original question here buttttt.....as somone who did in fact "jump through hoops" and went through A LOT to have a baby, a gender reveal party invite would get a big ol' Chat Icon from me and I would mostly likely decline the invite. So overbaord IMHO.

ETA: most people have a baby shower (and get gifts)...then once the baby is born people visit in the hospital (and again they bring gifts). A gender reveal party just seems like too much to me. UNLESS it is being done IN LIEU of one of these things (ie the shower)

But what if they arent even looking to get gifts?? I've been to two of these and neither of them were about "getting gifts". THe couples paid for everything and generally just wanted to share and celebrate that moment with people. Alot of people dont want to wait to find out the sex till the delivery but yet still want a special 'moment'. Doesn't make them greedy people that only want our money and gifts. IMO, of course

Re: Gender Reveal Party

I had totally ignored this thread bc I don't have kids, very few of my friends have kids, and when I'm prego, I'm not going to want to know the sex ahead of time, but I had to see why it was So compelling.

I should have known it would be drama.

I can see both sides of it. Life is REALLY short and there are so many negative things, sickness, funerals, etc, why not celebrate everything you can? If it were a relative or close friend, I'd be really excited to go to a gender reveal party (but I'd be confused about gift expectations).

If it's another opportunity to get gifts, I'd say it's a little over the top. I wouldn't expect that kind of party to be at a hall, but maybe they are really excited, tried hard to have a baby and their house can't fit them. I'd prefer to not have to bring a gift if I'm already going to give a shower gift, a baby gift and a 1st birthday gift, etc.

I think until we know whether gifts are expected, it's hard to judge.

Maybe you can ask the mom's mom or other relative casually if there is a registry for this event, and then they will tell you yes, or they'll tell you no gifts expected.

I would think it's a no-gifts occasion, especially since it will be easier to buy gifts for her once you know the gender.

LOL at fart party! I can see that perspective, too, but I feel like a baby, a wedding, agraduation, a significant birhtday, they should all be celebrated. Life is to short. I'll take any excuse to get together with family and friends, althugh I do have one family member in particular I feel who WOULD hold fart parties for his/her kids if they could get away with it.

I think maybe they don't have space in their home and that's why they booked a hall.

Maybe they struggled for years and are so excited.

I don't get all the animosity. So many shit things in life, that I don't mind celebrating when I can.

Everyone lives weddings and the excess of it and then people end up divorced. At least a baby is for keeps Chat Icon

Some people just sound so miserable.

I'd get a gift of course. But if people are doubting them hosting such an event and think its silly, then you're probably not a good friend anyway and should stay away.

It's free food and a joyful occasion. Geez Louise!

Chat Icon Chat Icon Thank you ! If someone wants to celebrate who cares ??!! Life is hard enough. There is so much bitterness on here.

I don't think it's bitterness as much as exasperation with the over the top celebrating people do.

I love babies, I love weddings, I love parties. I'm also broke.

If it was a party thrown by someone I like- I would go. I'd bring a gift, if I could afford one. I'd also roll my eyes and talk to my sister about how ridiculous I think it is for about 2 minutes. (I feel the same about all the wedding parties too- there should be a shower, a bachelorette and a wedding- nothing more, nothing less Chat Icon)

I'm sure those of us who don't agree with it aren't lying awake at night obsessing over the unfairness of it all, plotting our revenge and screaming through the streets with signs protesting Gender reveal parties.

This is what I'm thinking too. I can't be alone in throwing a party to celebrate with friends or having friends that do the same. I had my kid's communion last year & the last thing I wanted was for people to think they had to give more because of where I picked or even give a gift at all. It was about celebrating the occasion with friends.

The only time I feel like something is a fundraiser is when it comes with registry info & it's from the guest of honor.

I never once said anything about thinking they are greedy Chat Icon I just think it's over-the-top.
I can totally see inviting people over to your home or something to bask in the gender reveal but in my opinion renting a hall and stuff for it is a bit much.

I Chat Icon this so much.

Particularly the part about rolling my eyes and talking to my sister about how ridicilous the party is...because in the REAL WORLD people do this all the time but on LIF everyone gets an invite to a party and says "WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE TO CELEBRATE EVERY SINGLE THING IN THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Whether or not someone "expects" a gift at any party they throw, most of us are brought up that you never go empty handed somewhere. So whether people can understand it or not, a party can add a little stress to one that is invited because they know they will feel obligated to bring a gift.

Chat Icon You know what's funny? Everyone on this thread is talking about how miserable and negative people on LIF are, but I have to say that I feel like on this site- whether it be real or faked- I see MUCH more positivity than I do in the real world.
Case in point- what I quoted above!
I feel like a real debbie downer when I read stuff on here sometimes.
Because I need a break from my daughter, because I don't like getting invited to excessive parties, because I don't always see the bright side of snow storms, because sometimes I just like to wallow in negativity for a bit! Yet I come here and everyone always seems to be so sunshine and roses and rainbows!
Kind of makes me feel like there is something wrong with me!
But then I hear people in my office, people in my family, friends in real life, and they all sound like me.
Hmmmm....

Re: Gender Reveal Party

I absolutely love a good party -- if you've ever hung out with me you know that I'm a walking party. Chat Icon

But if I get an invite for a gender reveal in a hall, yes I WILL roll my eyes for a second and think "really?" and gossip with my DH about how crazy it is that they are doing it. This doesn't mean I don't enjoy celebrating a baby or that I am Cruella Deville and in my spare time skin dalmations for the fur. I'm human and I judge because well, did you read the part about being human? The whole "the world is such a negative place why can't we just enjoy a celebration" argument is great for when you are in the question round as a Miss America contestant, but again I live in this place called reality.

Parties are wonderful but as each trend happens and MORE parties are added to events, it can be hard to juggle it all. From all the events with weddings to now the increasing number of events for when you have a baby. Pretty soon there's going to be a "Conception Party" where everyone cheers your DH on and gives pointers on positions, all with great decoration ideas from Martha Stewart Living.

You want to celebrate and go to all the events but maybe your bank account is saying "B*tch please, not another party." Of course there is the option of "Just don't go" and that is 100% true. However I imagine that it really stinks when you say no because the host is disappointed, you feel like crap and then when 1032094 pics on FB show up you feel left out.

Both of these said perfectly!!! But especially the last part of what you just said. Most people people feel you shouldn't show up empty handed and whether it was the intention or not would feel obligated to bring a gift. If the hosts' true and honest intentions were just to celebrate their happy occasion and not to expect gifts they could have easily included one of those saying on the cards:

~Please, no presents but your presence~

ETA: ^or something like that...I've seen it on bday party invites for much older family members. They just want to be happy they've made it this far in life but clearly don't have the want or need for extra material things.

This....I am shocked about how much people spend on all these parties and then the guests feel obligated to give a gift......I mean think about how many threads on here and LIW about people not getting gifts.

I spent 2 years tryign to have my DS and celebrate him everyday since he was born but I don't feel the need to throw a big party to do so.

Re: Gender Reveal Party

I will preface this by saying I didn't get through all the pages of responses.

But, if this is a gender reveal party, I would think that they wouldn't expect gifts because how would you know what to get? The couple is finding out the sex of the baby, so presumably they either want girl things or boy things. And since you haven't found out the sex until AFTER you have arrived at the party, there is no way you could know ahead of time, KWIM? What would you bring? Something gender neutral would be kind of pointless since the baby's gender isn't going to be a surprise. It would be a waste to bring both pink and blue, because half of the gifts would have to be returned.

This is my thinking.

Re: Gender Reveal Party

Awe.. when I was pregnant (hello hormones) I thought a gender reveal party was the most beautiful idea ever I would cry just thinking about it..not that it mattered either way but I felt like a big piece of the puzzle of who my beautiful perfect baby would be was revealed. I envisioned games and baby pools and prizes. I envisioned all my loved ones finding out with me and everyone soooo excited and crying with the results. My family talked me down and we had immediate family at home which was just as great but I could totally understand why a pregnant woman would want a hall lol ... If there is no registry I don't think a gift is expected. Its probably just a celebration.

You ladies are so pathetic. It's a party. Go and have fun.

Let me guess: those of you who are complaining about this and that, if you didn't get an invite to such a party, you'd be complaining about that, too. Admit it.

So someone wants to do something different than the norm, throw a different kind of party and everyone here is getting hot and bothered and their panties in a bunch. My goodness gracious. This is frustrating to read!!!

Life is short.
Smile.
Have fun.

Jeez!!!
