Glycerin Suppositories

A friend has a 10 month old who is really constipated. She has tried prunes and her dr told her to do miralax and to stop solids but none of that is working. Would the glycerin suppositories work and if so where would she get them from, the dr or like a CVS type place? How much does she use? How does it work?

Re: Glycerin Suppositories

I imagine they would work. You can buy children's glycerin suppositories at CVS. Instructions are on the box. As for the Miralax, it doesn't work right away, can take a day or 2. It works by drawing more water into the poop so that it's softer.

Re: Glycerin Suppositories

We do these with 3yr old DD. They work within minutes! Not sure about a 10 month old baby...she may want to consult with her ped first!

But they most certainly work and are super easy to administer!

I had to use them with DS when he was a few months old. I use the childrens ones from CVS (CVS brand) and find them to work well.

I used them on my 2 month old and also on my older daughter. We were instructed to buy the children's and cut them in half and use the top half (the part that will be shaped like a cone so it can be inserted). I discard the rest. With my daughter it worked within 10 minutes with my son it took a few hours but still worked. To keep it in, I had to hold their legs closed for a few minutes

I had to use them w/ DS#3 when he was a newborn. They definitely work.......quickly.
I got them at CVS and cut into 1/4.

Re: Glycerin Suppositories

I think she needs to find the right dosage of miralax. she may have to give it daily for a while. some kids just tend to be constipated no matter what (one of my DDs eats tons of fruits and veggies but has always been constipated). have her ask her doctor about a flax seed oil supplement too. I've found that to help.

Re: Glycerin Suppositories

I've had to use them on both DDs. Def get the pediatric ones. Use the amount (full, 1/2, etc) that the doctor tells her to use. I never used vaseline to insert it. It melts really easily, so it just sort of rolled it between my fingers for a few seconds and it got nice and melty enough to insert. Also, you have to insert it far enough to get past the sphincter...so just push it in far enough for her finger to be pushed firmly against the "bum" then hold her hand there for a few seconds. Both my DDs often pushed it right back out if I didn't do this. And tell her not to fret if she sees it expelled in the diaper later...this has happened to me several times and it shocked me sometimes when I've forgotten I'd given it. I never found immediate relief with them, but continued using at my Dr's instructions...I figured if nothing else it would just lube everything up and make it easier for them to "go".
