when your infant is constipated & FF
do you try to switch their formula thinking maybe it's the formula?
ds has been constipated since he's started formula (after BF for a week) & my ped suggests adding prune juice to his bottle everyday instead of finding a different formula. Does that make sense? I guess I'd have to add prune juice to his bottle until he's off of the formula at 12 months?

My DS gets prune juice currently for poop issues. He's on Gentlease.
He's just starting solids though so eventually, the fruits will take the place of the prune juice (I will just try to minimize his banana intake).

I bottle fed my DD expressed breast milk. I read a whole lot about how BF babies should poop like 5 times a day. Well, not my daughter. She would go once every 3-4 days on average sometimes longer. My dr. also suggested the juice which did not go over well, she did not want it. After talking with my dr and doing some reading, I found that it is not considered constipation unless they are straining, in pain and their BM are hard or chalky. When my DD would go it would not be that way so I was ok with that.

I found that it is not considered constipation unless they are straining, in pain and their BM are hard or chalky. When my DD would go it would not be that way so I was ok with that.
hmm, my son's is hard like playdoh & usually just stays in position hanging out of his tush (sorry for the tmi) & I have to clean it out. He cries while pushing. I might have to up the prune juice qty then & hope things work out once he can have fruits.

Like the pp said, it's technically not constipation but, it does cause them discomfort so it needs to be addressed somehow. The ped didn't seem concerned at all and didn't suggest switching formulas at all.
I want to keep him on the Gentlease because I ran through a gammut of formulas with DS 1 and he ended up on Sim Sensitive because of lactose issues and he had horrible gas. I would rather add the juice once a day and not deal with the gas again (it caused a lot of long, sleepless nights).

Both the GI and our ped suggested I put a couple of teaspoons of dark karo syrup in each of DS' bottles. I think I was told 2-3 teaspoons per bottle but I started with just 1 teaspoon and that did the trick. DS was so little (6 weeks) that I did not feel comfortable with giving him prune juice. We did the Karo syrup for a while until he no longer needed it, which was a couple of months.

I did the same think..except I used the light karo syrup...people don't realize that Karo..which is corn syrup is the first active ingredient in most sensitive formula..My doc. told me to give that much, but I just gave 2 teaspoons in two-three bottles a day when he appeared to be constipated and that worked. By the time he was 12 weeks, I switched to gentlease and didn't need to anymore, it softened his stool.
Trust what your doc. tells you.

I had the same issue - only BF my daughter for a week. Switched to formula (Similac Advance) and she started having difficulty going. I switched to Similac Sensitive and did bicycle kicks after every feed and during every changing. It helped her with pushing and gas.
I didn't put anything in her formula. A gf of mine suggested brown sugar in the bottle but we just did sensitive formula and kicks. She's 7 weeks now and no issues.
eta: how often does he go? My ped said not to switch formulas either but I did anyway. My daughter would cry so hard and strain so hard. I couldn't take it and switched...

I used gentlease
Moved her legs, and lots of burping etc. Still I was told if she doesn't poop after 48hrs then I could call otherwise, no biggie. Like others said, unless she was in pain, had blood in her poop etc, we were told it was ok.

I wouldn't give him juice every day!!! I'd change his formula first. There are many other things to try before going to juice.
