Bottles!!!!! I need help!!!

So I got the Avent Essentials Gift Set which comes with

microwave sterilizer, two 9-ounce bottles with two slow flow nipples, two 4-ounce bottles with two newborn nipples, bottle/first cup trainer, newborn silicone pacifier, milk powder dispenser and bottle brush. It makes a great gift for a new bundle of joy. BPA-free.

I do plan on BF and getting my hands on the Medela Pump In Style Advanced Breastpump with Metro Bag, BPA Free and Medela 5-Ounce Breastmilk Bottle (Set of 3)

Should I keep the Avent? Or should I exchange it for the

Born Free Classic Bottle Gift Set
The perfect shower gift, Born Free® bottles are the ideal feeding system for both breastfeeding and formula feeding. Born Free® bottles allow baby to control the milk flow for an experience closer to breastfeeding. The ActiveFlow Venting Technology is clinically designed to reduce colic and gas. Also, it is hassle free, with fewer parts to clean and maintain. The Classic bottle line is made from a premium, durable material that is ideal for sterilization and includes three 5-ounce bottles, three 9-ounce bottles, three level 3 silicone nipples, 1 formula dispenser and 1 twister bottle brush set. Bottom rack dishwasher safe and BPA free. Limited lifetime warranty. Imported.

Orrrrrrrrr should I just get something else. I woke up at 3am stressing about thisChat Icon

Re: Bottles!!!!! I need help!!!

I've heard from a lot of people that the Avent bottles leak. My sister hated them. I use born free and like them, but everyone says you have to see what the baby likes. I had a dr brown set and tried to switch to it for gas and my daughter screamed her head off because she couldn't latch to the nipple. I would say dr brown and born free seem to be the most popular. The born free has less pieces to wash.

I loved Avent bottles, it's all we used. We had a couple of dr browns that we tried, but the nipple was softer/flimsier and Dd preferred a firm nipple which Avent had. Never had any issues with leaking and they have minimal pieces and are easy to clean.

Re: Bottles!!!!! I need help!!!

We tried Avent bottles. They were ok at 1st but then ds wouldn't take to them anymore. After trying a few different ones we stuck with born free & love them! Every baby is different. So maybe buy a couple of born free & avent bottles & see which one lo takes to before deciding on a set.

Re: Bottles!!!!! I need help!!!

IDK if this is an option for you but my friend has every bottle out there. Through trial & error, she finally found that her DD did best w/born free. Anyway, she is lending me 1 of each bottle so I dont have to buy 20 different types. Is there any one who can lend you a few tester bottles?

Re: Bottles!!!!! I need help!!!

We tried and liked Dr. Browns bottles and Born Free bottles. We settled on Born Free, because they have less parts (we don't have a dishwasher) and DD didn't get gassy or spit up much on them. But she also didn't have colic or reflux.

I would honestly return both gift sets, and just get a few of each brand to test out. When you know what works, get what you need.

I will say that I have the first years bottle warmer, which we like, and the DR Browns bottle brush, which is the best I've found and I've tried a few. So it might be better for you to mix and match brands when it comes to a lot of the stuff included in those sets you got.

Re: Bottles!!!!! I need help!!!

as far as the difference of born free and avent, i cant help you there since i use dr. browns.
i was both breast feeding and formula feeding and then went right to just formula feeding.
if you are looking more for an answer on # of bottles to have on hand (since that seems to be the difference between the 2 sets), i had 4 4oz bottles and 3 8oz bottles at first. it was enough for the beginning. once he went over 4oz i had about 6 8oz bottles on rotation.

is it possible to wait to see how the BF'ing goes to see if you would need all the bottles or would that be past the return date?

the bottle brush is def a keeper as is the formula dispenser. i used it all the time

IMO this is the best option. I had the wide neck Dr. Browns newborn set and DD didn't take them at all. We tried Playtex, Avent and Tommee Tippee before giving Dr. Browns standard neck a shot. They work perfect for her. Point is not every bottle works for every baby. I think BRU is still running the BOGO half off sale. I would buy a bottle from a few different brands while they are on sale and give them a shot.

I'd keep the avent gift set, but get a few single bottles of different brands to see what your DD takes to.

I'd get one of each bottle you want to try and get a multi-bottle gift set of the one that your DC prefers. That's what we ended up doing and it worked out well.

Re: Bottles!!!!! I need help!!!

I had the avent gift set and the dr browns gift set (both of which I registered for) and the medela bottles for pumping. She hated the medela bottles but it was never much of an issue bc I didn't produce much milk.

We started with the dr. browns, and she had no issues with them so we never tried anything else and I returned the avent.

IMO i wouldn't open a gift set box without knowing if she will "take" to a certain bottle, because if she doesn't, it will be a waste.

I know dr. browns wasn't on your list but if you wanted to try I have a ton of the 4oz bottles you can test out.

Re: Bottles!!!!! I need help!!!

I'm breastfeeding ... I pump into medela bottles & then even it's time for DD to have a bottle, we pour the milk into a born free bottle. I picked them bc they help babies not get gas bc of a special dohickey thing that goes on top of bottle(under nipple part) lol. So my vote is for born free! We r currently still using the 5 oz bottles(DD is 11 weeks)... The 3 pack was enough since I'm a teacher & off for the summer so I'm home a lot to feed DD. I got the 9 oz 6-pack of born free bottles with my completion discount for when DD is ready for those.

I didn't wanna bother with dr browns even tho they help with gas also bc it looked complicated to clean & I've heard several people complain about cleaning them. I actually registered for dr browns & wound up returning all if them.

Also, whatever bottles u get- don't open them all... It's kind of trial & error with bottles so open the bare minimum that way if DD likes a certain kind u are not stick with opened packages of bottles she doesn't like & u can't return.

Good luck with ur decision. You are getting close to the finish!!!! Yay!!! Chat Icon

Re: Bottles!!!!! I need help!!!

I posted about this a few weeks ago, but if you don't want to spend the money on the Medela bottles, Gerber makes a set of 3 8oz bottle with nipples for $4. They also make the 5oz also. They fit the Medela PIS perfectly and the nipples are very very very similar. I highly suggest those. They are called Gerber First Essential BPA free bottles. Every baby is different so try not to stress. With DD we could only use Mam, Tommee Tippee and AVent when she was older. DS was BF and refused any bottle that did not have a free similac nipple from the hospital on it. These nipples fit the medela and gerber as well. Now we can use the gerber only. I have poked bigger holes in our free nipplesChat Icon I had almost $40 worth of "nice" bottles and he wants the free one...Go figure
