Toddler Moms, Please Come In ....

DS is 2 years old and we don't plan on sending to nursery school until he's 3. I''m a SAHM and have been trying to teach him his numbers, letters and colors (without much success!)

Any tips or tricks? Any toy or book reccos? He's bursting with energy and just wants to run around. Am I trying too hard to "teach" him right now?

DS knew all of his colors and could count very high, but he refused to learn his ABC's... I put on the Letter Factory one time and he knew all the letters and their sounds.. I couldn't believe how much he learned from that video!

My DS is 19m and can identify all letters and numbers (1-10) because of these...

DS is 2 and very active so he learns numbers best by counting while he does things, like up the stairs to the deck, count the beeps listening to the house alarm walking out the door, 123 up when I pick him up, etc. Actually 2 people already mentioned 2 things that help with ABCs that we have, the Letter Factory video and the Baby Einstein ABC book box. Colors are still hit and miss. I just name everything by color all the time and he's starting to get it. At least red, blue, yellow, green. Purple and orange are still a stretch :)

I'd relax.
I think if you put the effort in and keep conversation flowing... Your kid should pick it up when ready.
I do a. Lot of talking and reading of story books to my kid.
I'm sending him to nursery at 3 too.

My daughter will be 2 in September. She can count to 10, knows all her shapes, quite a few colors and ABC's. Most of it I think she learned from my other daughter. My 2 year old hates to sit still....is very energetic. But I think she learned a lot by singing songs, books and tots like shape sorters.

Re: Toddler Moms, Please Come In ....

Not a lot of people will agree but Baby Einstein
DVDs helped a lot...my DD is 21 months and she can say and recognize the alphabet and count to almost 20. I also practice with her everyday and my mom and in laws practice with her too when they watch her. Every child is different and will learn on their own pace Chat Icon

Re: Toddler Moms, Please Come In ....

I wouldnt stress too much. I didnt send DS to preschool until he was 3 as well and his teacher told me most of the kids didnt recognize many letters, or know all their colors etc at the beginning of the year.

Just keep introducing them to him. DS loved Baby Einstein's number nursery and that is totally where he learned 1-5. Count everything, DS learned higher #s because when he was 2 we took a mommy & me class and we had to walk up 20 stairs, so each day we counted the stairs and it stuck. Letters he learned from Leapfrogs Letter Factory.

My DS is a visual learner so he learns best from watching and observing so videos/books etc really worked for him.

But seriously just enjoy this time with him, he will learn all this stuff in his own time!

Re: Toddler Moms, Please Come In ....

I second the Letter Factory
Also

Meet the Numbers
Meet the Colors

Meet the letters was a bit too much at 2 for her. At 3 she was more into it. But meet the numbers was a HUGE hit.

The letter factory is great. We use our chalkboard with our 2 yo. He learns most everything from that chalkboard. He can count, recognizes all letters and the sounds, sings songs. He can not figure out his colors, at allChat Icon Don't get frustrated , dcs knows more then we think

I'm also thinking of waiting until next year ( he will be 3 yr 4 months) to send him to nursery, not sure what to do

I didn't set aside time to teach those things specifically but I worked them into our everyday routine. While I'm driving or when I give both kids a bath we count or sing the ABC's, when we color I make sure we write out letters, #'s and shapes. I'll hold up objects and ask ds to tell me what color the object is. I just did a little everydayChat Icon

I agree with this. Only because with my first, I really "taught" him these things - he could recognize all upper case letters and numbers 1-10 in or out of order before he was even 2! I thought it was so great but, you know what, that is pretty much what they do in the 3's and some 4's (not in his school in the 4's but some do). So, if he didn't know any of these things he would have been FINE. With my second, my DD I didn't seek to "teach" here these things. She is almost 2.5 and sometime between 2 and 2.5 she figured them out herself Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon My point is, when they are ready, they will pick it up on their own OR they will just learn it in school!

Re: Toddler Moms, Please Come In ....

My DS is 2.5 and we're still working on letters and number - the colors he finally got from me repeating everything's color. A former Kindergarten teacher suggested to me to personalize things - Daddy's Car is yellow, etc. For letters - spell his name, Mommy's, Daddy's, etc. then they are more interested. She also told me to relax too, but I know its hard when other kids around may know them already - but I'm trying to follow what others said and know he'll get it in his own time!

I wouldn't stress it too much as others have said. My DD is 2 yrs 9 months and has known how to count, identify shapes and colors and say the alphabet for a while - identifying letters and numbers has been more difficult. She loves the leap frog series - letter factory, number land, amazing alphabet adventure - and we also have the magnetized letter thing for the fridge. She has a Melissa and Doug puzzle with batteries that say the letter also. I have started to point out letters and sounds on signs as we drive and walk around since she shows an interest. I'm not worried at all that she doesn't know all of this yet. She will start preschool in sept and I know she'll continue to learn there. Good luck!

Same here. He suddenly knew colors and surprised us with counting to 16...! Starting nursery school this fall, age three.
