I have mixed feelings about your post, starting with, I haven't had an 8 hour work day outside of July and august (and not all of them) in 10 years. most of my days are 10-16 hours, I'm not counting commuting time either.
I'd love to have 8 hour days, however it appears that most jobs that pay decently, have opportunities etc, require more than 8 hour days. I find it annoying when I hear some people say that they had to stay late to 6 or 630, since my reality is leaving at 7 is considered a good day and generally "early"
I make a decent living, but am still in the catagory of feeling very hand to mouth with my current house, which is nice but not huge and my 9 year old cars. We don't take extravigant vacations and eating out is Friendlys.
Do I find it somewhat ridiclous? yes, it bothers me every day. Unfortunately this is what it took to buy the first house then upgrade to the 4br 2 bath house.
But should it be that way? Should your children never get to see you just so you can have an average life? Should you still be hand to mouth working 50-60 hours a week not including commute time?
We left Long Island in December because for us, that was NOT acceptable. Not to mention, as someone who is making sub 40k/year, I couldn't afford day care for 2 kids for 10-16+ hours a day. That would have exceeded my income. My husband also couldn't find a job post graduation anywhere on LI, Brooklyn, Queens.... the closest job he could find in his field (which he paid to go to school for and is specialized) was in CT. But, if we already owned a home which had seen it's value fall below what we owed, we wouldn't have been able to leave. We consider ourselves to be very lucky in that regards.
Now, if you posted about working 10-16hr days and being out of debt, owning your home outright, taking lavish vacations etc then maybe I would say "good for you" but I can't do that. It shouldn't be a pat on the back for you for working like that. Especially the number of people who are salaried working unpaid overtime. Sorry, my kids are little once, they'll never be this age again and having "things" isn't worth me never getting to put them to bed or feed them dinner.

Re: "Hard Times: Lost on Long Island" was on HBO last night
Here is the problem..the American dream is dissipating before our eyes. If you watched the documentary and if you just remember that just a short time ago, a person was able to work normal hours, find a job and provide for their families. You know the American dream....a house, picket fence, a few kids, a dog, a car, a family vacation every year, etc. You saved some, spent some and hopefully were able to put your kids through school and retire happily ever after at 65. That wasn't much of a struggle for many and it certainly wasn't out of reach. Now not so much. The jobs are disappearing before our eyes. Education no longer guarantees you shit except a huge mountain of student loans that you can never get rid of since you can't find a job. Adults are moving back in with their parents and parents are moving back in with their children just to survive.
Companies continue to outsource job to India or wherever the labor is cheaper and the Americans continue to suffer because the fields we once were specialized in are not hiring here. It's a vicious cycle and it's not getting better...if anything IMO it's getting worse. Meanwhile taxes continue to rise, gas goes up, food goes up but the jobs are gone. WTH...does that make sense to anyone? It's disgusting and honestly it scares me..not so much for me but for my children.

I didnt see this yet, but saw the previews.
It is so hard on long island, i see a lot of people who work 8-4 or 9-5 and think its enough and it should be enough.
But its not enough and in order to survive people have to work almost triple to be successful.
My DH owns a small business, that has grown over the last 8 years, he started with 2 people and now we have almost 23 people plus over 50 employees employed out of state.
I can not tell you how hard it is to find good people to work who know what they are doing.
I can not even begin to tell you how many NO-SHOWS i have had for interviews and also I have hired 3 people recently and their start date was monday and they never called or anything, just never heard from them. So although i see the hardships I also see the flip side in trying to find good honest reliable people. The good people I do have, come in early and leave very late, its not the best quality of life either.
I have to agree with what you are saying about finding employees who want to work. I thought this when I saw the show. Where are these people?
We have a small business and we support all local small business as well trying to keep the hope alive that one day things will get back to a better place. It is VERY hard to find "good, hardworking people". It really is.
Aside from our business, I also work freelance for an advertiser who is ALWAYS in need of salespeople. They can make VERY GOOD commission and to be honest, it's a very easy sell, no office to go to every day... It feels impossible for them to find more people. People who come in are expecting 6 figures from day 1 and don't even know the business yet! The hours are extremely flexible, etc etc etc.

I see this a lot in real estate- you can make over $100K - of course- but very few people want to put the time in
most days I am the ONLY person at the office out of 40 agents....

I also wanted to comment on these 2 posts.
I work for a big company, 50,000+ employees. My particular office had openings for a few different types of jobs throughout the past year. Great benefits, vaca, decent pay.
You would not believe how many people no-showed for interviews and came late to interviews. Believe it or not, my managers had a whale of a time finding people to fill these positions. The people who did come - a few seemed like they didn't take it seriously, and others scoffed at the pay (which was not bad). Given the economy, my coworkers and i found it pretty incredible.

No, it shouldn't be that way but I feel like we've been brainwashed into thinking we have to go to these extremes. I'm reminded of OWS and the people holding up their stories, specifically the former soldier who was working insane hours, had no insurance and an unimpressive salary. And he was ok with that. But it's no ok. If you work 60-70 hours a week, you should be rich. No one should have to work that much just to get by. Our quality of life is headed down the tubes because all we're going to do is work.

And on the flipsides, I know very motivated, reliable folks who don't even get calls back when they submit their resumes. They DO show up for interviews and are either in the "overqualified/aged" crowd or have too little experience and no one wants to train them.

I've had the same experience hiring for my own department (I.T.) twice, and also another manager hiring for customer service.
We've had no shows, latenesses, attitudes about the really basic evaluation they're asked to do (because we have had SO many people lie about their computer experience). We've had people be greeted, sit down with the evaluation, and then get up and walk out without a word. One guy brought his wife to his first and second interviews and she sat in the office waiting for him, because "She wanted to come." Another woman asked where the bathroom was, took the key, and then dropped it in the hall as she left the building.
You would think maybe that I work in a dungeon or something, but I don't. In fact, it's a really nice office.
I choose to do phone interviews to limit wasted time, but sometimes that doesn't help either. I pay to advertise on Dice.com, a site specifically for technical people. I don't feel that's scraping the bottom of the barrel. The salaries I offer are competitive for the experience and job description. If someone's desired salary range is way over what I can afford, I don't waste their time either.
Fact is, just because a candidate is unemployed, it doesn't mean that they're going to be punctual, experienced, truthful, eager to work, or good for the position. It's still not easy to find great people, even with so many out of work.

It's baffling that you guys are having this experience with interviews etc. I know of at least 3 people looking and they're not getting ANY calls. One is still actually employed, but has reliability, education, experience.. NADA.

Alan Fromm, one of Nassau County UJA-Federation's Connect to Care's clients, will be on hand to answer questions at a special free screening of HBO's Hard Times: Lost on Long Island on Monday, July 23. In partnership with UJA-Federation of New York.
This will be at the Sid Jacobsen JCC. Alan was featured in the movie. A lovely man and a wonderful family.

I'm guessing those three people haven't interviewed with us.
I found my job through a member of LIW/LIF and my first developer recommended my 2nd developer. I prefer finding people through word of mouth, especially if someone trustworthy is willing to vouch for you. What fields are your friends in?

I am glad someone spoke up about this, I was really feeling like I was being made out to be a liar on the previous page.
Our salaries are competitive but the bottom line is, no and I mean no one is going to come in to our company and know exactly what we do, so there is a training period involved. But being extremely technical or skilled in the field is key...and there is no school that teaches what we do.
My DH has never had to let someone go for lack of work, we literally bleed at the seems before we hire so we know we can afford to pay someone in a permanent position.
I did watch the documentary, and i do feel bad for the people, i really do, its a terrible thing to be out of work, but there are jobs out there...maybe not 6 figure, glamorous offices with catered lunches and car service but there are jobs with benefits available.

All 3 didn't show up? What kind of business is it? Unless it's a highly specialized industry, that doesn't sound like what others I know are experiencing in hiring on LI. If you're having that difficult a time filling positions that people who are hired don't even show, maybe you need to look at your hiring/interview process and your job listings because it sounds like the applicants you're getting are bottom of the barrel. Or, even payment/benefits may need to be adjusted.
This remark really got me heated. Bottom of hte barrel? adjust the pay? We have tried many different approaches, we have a brand new office that is 2 years old we don't work in a dungeon. YES people don't show up!!!! Thats the reality

You're getting heated for no reason then. You said yourself that people don't show for interviews and that 3 people you HIRED didn't show up for their first day of work. Your statement: "I have hired 3 people recently and their start date was monday and they never called or anything, just never heard from them." makes it sound like ALL THREE didn't show up on the same day to start.
Unless the work you're asking them to do is horrific, that's not a good track record, IMO. And yes, maybe your talent pool is the bottom of the barrel, that doesn't mean YOU are. People who don't bother to even give the courtesy of a phone call to reject the job they're scheduled to start are trash, period. Three people all not showing up on the same start date is problematic. Your potential interviews not showing up. It really sounds like there's a problem with your talent pool. You say it's specialized and requires a certain set of skills that you can't get from schooling, that leaves you with 2 options: Bring in talent willing to learn from scratch or hire people who've had experience elsewhere. Maybe the incentives to work for you over company X aren't there in terms of salary/benefits, especially if you're competing against a larger company.
There are GOOD people out there looking and not getting calls. One of my former coworkers is looking, she's in accounts payable. She has over 10 years in with our old job, is reliable, has a degree and has plenty to offer. NO CALLS. A friend in IT, missing a degree but has plenty of work experience and training to supplement it. No interest in him. He went back to work this week by being rehired by a former employer who had an opening. No calls from anywhere else, not even for interviews. Even when I looked for a short time before leaving LI, I got no calls whereas 5 years prior my phone was ringing off the hook.
I will never understand why employers can't /won't step outside of the current talent pool/set of qualifications/requirements and take a chance on someone who doesn't have the cookie cutter skills needed but has a strong work ethic and is capable. Unless it's a job where a certain credential is required of course. (like a Dr or lawyer, RN, social worker etc) I have watched resumes get tossed for the silliest things. No degree (really, I do medical billing, it's not rocket science) or no certification (can be obtained relatively easily), no experience in office work yet a history of employment with high level responsibilities, name(yes, I had a manager who would toss resumes straight from the fax if she couldn't pronounce the name), schooling (one place I worked, the manager would toss resumes from graduates of certain schools), lack of schooling, current employer, too long a work history (ageism)... and my favorite: OVERQUALIFIED.

It's baffling that you guys are having this experience with interviews etc. I know of at least 3 people looking and they're not getting ANY calls. One is still actually employed, but has reliability, education, experience.. NADA.
Weird.
I'm guessing those three people haven't interviewed with us.
I found my job through a member of LIW/LIF and my first developer recommended my 2nd developer. I prefer finding people through word of mouth, especially if someone trustworthy is willing to vouch for you. What fields are your friends in?
Two are accounting type jobs, but not CPA - accounts receivables/payables, general office work etc. The other is IT/Help Desk.
The IT guy's biggest issue is lack of degree. He has solid experience, is willing to show his stuff but doesn't get calls for interviews.
From friends I have in HR, they've told me they're flat out overwhelmed with the amount of resumes they get. One friend told me on day 1 of placing an ad for an admin assistant (mid level, so some work experience was needed) she had over 500 resumes. That's nuts. So, I can see how good people's resumes may get passed over easily in favor of flashier resumes or resumes from experienced people.

Re: "Hard Times: Lost on Long Island" was on HBO last night
Just got finished watching this and it really choked me up. It really makes me sad for our future and our kids future. It reminded me that it's getting harder to keep our heads above water and live a comfortable life without sacrificing the quality of life.
