Whats the story with bumpers?

No flames please!!

Im reallly looking for feedback in terms of getting bumpers... why/why not?
Is there real evidence that they are dangerous/perfectly safe?

I registered for the breathables... but not sure if that's enough if they start to stand up and fall down...

Re: Whats the story with bumpers?

Bumpers have been shown to prevent air circulation. Good air circulation in the crib has been shown to prevent SIDS. Babies find a way to move themselves around even before they're actually mobile. If the bumpers are there and the baby presses up against them but lacks the mobility to turn their heads away, they can suffocate.

Here is an article from last year discussing the AAP's standpoint on bumpers:
Get bumpers out of cribs, doctor group urges

The AAP recommends nothing. Not even breathable bumpers.

That said, we have breathable bumpers in the crib. We didn't move DD out of the rock n play until she was 9 months old. By then, the issue of mobility wasn't a big deal. Air circulation for SIDS risk wasn't that big a deal either but still on my mind. I didn't want her sticking her arms through the slats (she did it a few times) and getting stuck. I wanted her to feel a little cozy in there but without any danger. I like the breathable bumpers and they are still on her crib at 18 m.

You, as a parent, have to do what you're comfortable with. You don't want to take unnecessary risks, but just make educated decisions and follow your instinct. You can also ask your pediatrician for advice.

You're supposed to take EVERYTHING out of the crib once they can start to pull up and stand because otherwise they can stand on the bumpers and use them to launch themselves out of the crib. DD is really small and the breathable bumpers don't hold any weight (at least not the way I have them on the crib) so even if she tried, I don't think she could use them to jump out -- at least not yet lol. So I'm going with my instinct on that one. If I had regular bumpers in there that are stiff and hold weight, I think she could jump out.

Sooo helpful! Thanks!! Did you have your LO in the playpn as a newborn? I think that's what Im going to do as well.
Also, to your point about them climbing onto the bumber, this exact situation just happened to my brother/neice... Its so scary!

What Sandra said.

No bumpers necessary in PNP/playpen. The walls are mesh and soft.

We had DD in the rock n play from the day she came home from the hospital. That was her "bed" -- it was actually where she slept for nearly every single sleep (she hated the swing) unless she was in the car. It made traveling to the ILs super easy and even a trip to Boston a snap because we just took her bed along!

While I don't recommend waiting until 9 months to transition to the crib, using the rock n play as her bassinet / bed was a great luxury and we plan to do it again with #2 for at least the first few months when they use your breathing overnight to help regulate their own. We did tons of tummy time while she was awake to help combat that whole "flat head" problem some reviewers on amazon talked about with the rock n play and she never had a flat head problem.

i think it depends when you put the baby in the crib.
i wouldnt use bumpers before they are old enough to move around the crib easily. but once they are rolling around i feel like they are a necessity.
we didnt put DD in the crib until she was 8m old, we used the rock n play up til then (although she was a preemie so equiv to the size of a 6m old). once we put her in the crib she was everywhere so she def needed the bumpers. i still have them in at 13.5m. she sleeps with her head up against them almost every night and she's absolutely fine.
IMO breathable bumpers are sort of pointless because they dont protect the baby from bumps.
