backup babysitting?

hey ladies,
my MIL and sometimes SIL watch my DS (5 1/2 months), and I am FTWM. Any of you in this situation, what do you do when MIL needs a day (or a week!) off... going on vacation, etc.? Not sure whether to find a daycare, or if they will even take him for a week here and there over the summer? Also not sure if daycare center will take care of DS like family? What to do?? ack!Chat Icon

I am a FTWM with a nanny. When my nanny needs to take off, my husband or I typically split the days off or ask family for help.

Re: backup babysitting?

We have family watching DC and if they need a day/week off, then DH or myself takes off. If its just a day we might call out sick, if a full week we just take vacation that week too ( or I'll take off M-W and he will Th-F)

Unfortunately, that is the price we pay for free childcare!!

Re: backup babysitting?

My MIL watches DS 2 days, FIL 1 day and daycare 2 days.

So far we have ony had one day where FIL and MIL were both busy. Our daycare was able to take him an extra day.

In the fall I know we are going to have an issue cause both FIL and MIL have trips planned so he will either go to daycare if they can take him or DH & I will split the days.

Re: backup babysitting?

I have the same issue. My mom watches my DS (15M) everyday while my DH and I work full time. When she has something, my In-laws will pitch in. But if no one is available, I will take a day off work or work from home.

I live in Bellmore and looked into all the day care centers in the area as a Plan C. There is a word for it, I forgot what it's called, when you need them once in a while - a day here, a day there. The only places I found that offered that kind of care were crazy far, like Huntington or Ronkonkama.

For now we're just winging it and I save my vaca days for "just in case".

It's tough. Good luck!

Re: backup babysitting?

We don't have backup. My husband or I have to take off.

My vacation time for work is used to watch my son when my parents can't.

Like another poster said, it's the price we pay for free daycare.

Sometimes it's really tight, especially when they want to go away on vacation. They've actually missed out on trips with friends because I can't take off work. It sucks for them, since they are retired and truly make such sacrifices for us.

Why not try to find a sitter for the week?

We are in the same situation. Sicknesses come up, family emergencies. We have no back up plan. That is what I am working on this summer. I took several days off this year bc my babysitter was unavailable.

I am going to try sittercity just to see if I can find someone in my neighborhood who could be the Plan B.
