How to get baby out of RnP?

My DD is 5 months old and still sleeping in the RnP. Th problem is that she is starting to get too big for it and I feel like any day now she will be able to roll out of it. We need to get her into her crib. When I try to put her in the crib, she cries hysterically until we take her out. Then it takes a while to calm her down. We have been letting her fall asleep in our bed and then put her in the rnp bc we don't know what else to do. Once she's in the RnP, she sleeps for at least 8 hours straight. My question is, how do you make the transition?

UGH I would love to hear this as well. My DS turned 5 months last week and still is in the R&P. He is a small baby, so Its not a matter of his size, I just really need him in the crib!!!

We took DS out of the RnP at 3 months old, since he's a big boy (16 lbs) and the slightest move made him rock and he wasn't a fan of it. As a interim transition since we didn't have the crib up yet, we put him to sleep in the pack and play and that worked well. Maybe try the pack and play first, since it's a flat surface for sleeping and it's a little smaller and less intimidating than the crib.

Have you tried the crib wedge? That worked for DD

If not you might need to be ready for CIO

Re: How to get baby out of RnP?

I had the same issue at 4 months. Take a few days when you can lose sleep and let them cry it out. At 5 months they are old enough for CIO it is more of if the parents can handle it.

It was very hard for me. DS was able to sleep flat after 2 days of it. And it was also the same time he started to sleep through the night.

Re: How to get baby out of RnP?

We slowly started napping DD in the crib and doing the RnP at night to help her get used to the crib.. it wasn't an easy transition but eventually she got used to it...

That RnP is just TOO GOOD!

We put DD in her crib starting at 5 months. It was a hard adjustment but eventually she did it. No secrets, just did it. She had to get used to it!

I am working on this now. My DD is 4 months old and I think she is ready for her crib. I have been napping her in her crib and then putting her in the RnP at night. I am home for the summer (I'm a teacher) so my summer job is to get her in the crib full time. My suggestion is to keep trying. I know it is difficult to hear them cry, but the will get used to it quickly (so I hear) Chat Icon

Re: How to get baby out of RnP?

I used the boppy to transition her and it worked like a charm. DD loved the incline from the RNP. So, I'd do the normal routine, bottle and rocking her in the glider and would be asleep in my arms.
I had the boppy in the crib. While she was asleep, instead of laying her down in the RNP, put her in the middle of the boppy. She was still on the incline that she liked and never noticed the difference. Id wait about 15 mins till she was in a deeper sleep, then remove the boppy. Did this for about 5 days, and was able to lay her flat in the crib ever since.

Thanks ladies! I am going to try the boppy tonight and buy the crib wedge. If they don't work I guess she's going to have to cio. I might cry more though! Wish me luck Chat Icon

Unless you are going to be in the room with her the whole time I would definitely not use the boppy. She can roll off or slide down and it can be a suffocation hazard.

i would say the same thing about a wedge - our ped told us to definitely not use them.

One trick we used was to put a few rolled up towels under one end of the mattress to give it a slight incline.
We also made sure to swaddle DS so he felt as snug as he was in the rnp. DS didn't really like swaddling, so we put him in a sleep sack which he seemed to like.

it took 2 nights of him not falling asleep and waking up a lot, but then he transitioned just fine and has been great since then.

We also put the RnP in his room next to the crib for a few nights before transitioning him to the crib so he'd get used to being in that room at night rather than just for naps.

good luck! Chat Icon

Re: How to get baby out of RnP?

I'd be too nervous to use a boppy or a crib wedge. They are not safe for sleeping, and 5 months is prime time to worry about breathing accidents. You don't want to start a bad habit where you have to sit next to her crib and wait for her to fall into a deep sleep so you can take away the boppy. Are you going to do that for every nap too? And for how many months? And what if, god forbid, you fall asleep in the glider while waiting for her to fall asleep and she's on that Boppy for an hour with no supervision? Don't start her with a habit you aren't willing to follow through with.

She cries like crazy when you put her in the crib because she knows that if she does, you'll just pick her up and put her in bed with you. Stop doing that, and she'll stop expecting it. At 5 months, babies learn new habits in, oh, 2 days. After 2 days, she won't remember her RnP. Really. Just start her sleeping where you want her to sleep, and she'll get over it. You might hear a lot of complaining about it at first, but every time you give in, you'll have to start this "training" all over again. Be strong! Let her cry. It will be a hard 2 days, but it will work, and you will be so glad you did it.

Re: How to get baby out of RnP?

DH and I had discussed and planned on DD going from RnP in our room to crib at 6 months. Its a bit older than most but that is what we felt most comfortable with. Needless to say that didn't happen until 7 months. Chat Icon However, we put her down the first night and she fell right asleep and slept 12 hours. Nothing whatsoever in the crib aside from a fitted sheet. I think what helped is that she would nap in her pack and play on her back both at home and at daycare. Also, we use a sound machine, so i think the consistency of the noise would be comforting.
