Re: Why do some women....

For me, the reasons I went epi-free were (1) the idea of getting a large needle in my back freaked me out.
(2) I'm not a big fan of mixing of drugs. I have more than one friend that had epidurals which slowed down their labor & then later had to be given something to speed up labor because they "were not progressing" & then wound up with c-sections. So I was going to try to suck it up & see how I did.
(3) I had a friend who had her epi & was not able to feel her legs during birth which led to major issues. I won't get into it here because I'm sure it's a rare occurrence.
(4) I saw my sister have a natural childbirth & I liked that she was alert, aware & seemed to recover quickly.
I had 2 natural childbirths. The PP was right, there are no medals given out for it. It's a personal choice.
One of the worst things I've heard from a friend who felt that natural childbirth was important to her was how disappointed she was in herself for giving in & having the epi.
Childbirth isn't a contest over who is a better mom, stronger willed. It's about having a healthy baby & mom. Whatever you choose in the throes of labor, recognize it's not how you get there. It's what you do after that counts.
A lot of these are the same reasons I didn't want or get the epi. My main reason was because it increases your risk of having a c-section. At my 6 week PP appointment my midwife said if I had gotten the epi I 100% would have needed a c-section. I pushed for 5 hours and there's no way that would have been possible with an epidural. I won't lie, it was the hardest thing I have ever done, but I went into it knowing my body was made for this and that I could do it. Also, my mother had 4 drug-free births so that calmed my nerves.

Whatever their reason is, hats off to them.
GIVE ME THOSE DRUGS!
Amen to that!
I knew even before I got pregnant I wanted an EPI lol and I made that clear at the hospital I delivered. I do not like pain...simple as that.

Definitely hats off to them but I looove the calm feeling after the epi kicks in-lol With #2, I progressed so quickly, arrived to the hospital at 6cm & was 7cm when I got the epi & I'm sure that I could have made it through the labor without the meds but I was thinking to myself that I DO NOT want to feel the cut from the episiotomy. That is more frightening to me than the actual birth so I chose epi.
The cut from the episiotomy doesn't hurt AT ALL. You don't even feel it while the baby is crowing because you're stretched to the point that it's completely numb down there (think about how you pull your skin taught when you wax -- when it's super taught, you don't feel it).
The pain AFTER while being stitched up if you tear is way worse. The episiotomy was NOTHING and it healed perfectly. Take a cut over a tear if you ever have a choice! I was cut AND tore, and the tearing was way worse. But he did inject a local anesthetic during the stitches while he was sewing me up... while I was holding the baby in my arms.

Do not feel guilty getting the epi. I got one and my birth experience was so great and positive. I'm not saying natural isn't as well...I'm just saying it can be just as positive of an experience as a drug-free birth. And my recovery was not bad...I was out of bed walking 2 hours after delivery.

Re: Why do some women....
The birth of my daughter made me sad for a while afterwards. It was just a very medical procedure, not really a labor. During my delivery my daughter was is in distress (from the pitocin is what I believe caused it). I got the epi, and could not feel anything. I had to look at the monitor to know when to push. It took hours to feel my legs again. The night of DDs delivery I could not move well at all. Hindering my ability to care for myself and DD. My back hurt for months after the Epi.
So that is my motivation for trying to go natural this time around. I plan on taking some Bradley classes, to prepare.

I wholeheartedly agree with tehabove. Ive worked in labor and delivery.. give me drugs.. im ok with drugs.. i have a very high threshold for pain and see no reason that if modern technology has allowed for me to have them, why ishouldnt take full advantage of that.. you are still going to feelpain.. it doesnt make it pain free.. just takes edges off,, allows you to relax, and possible get some sleep so you have some energy before delivering...

Re: Why do some women....
I know from my friends and family, the women who refused the epi had a much faster labor aside from their own personal reasons for not wanting the epi. I, on the other hand, will embrace my epi with open arms.

I guess it's different for everyone. With my first delivery, I definitely felt the "slice" from the knife but with my second delivery, I felt nothing.
