Dr. told me to watch my weight gain

I had actually been feeling like I was doing pretty good, since I'm 22 weeks and only gained about 12 lbs. so far. I barely gained anything my first trimester because I was constantly nauseous. But apparently I've gained 7 lbs since my last appointment a month ago, so the dr. said to try to slow down a little Chat Icon So I immediately went from feeling good about myself to feeling like a blimp. Guess I have to start making some more healthy choices!

12 lbs. at 22 weeks sounds good to me! I gained 62 lbs. with both my boys. I'm trying not to gain as much this time. It's tough!

Re: Dr. told me to watch my weight gain

i had gone up 8lbs in 5 weeks in my last visit... and honestly, i had been eating salads EVERY day for lunch and 100% healthy bfast plus walking 30-60min daily. sometimes your body just needs to do what it needs to do. don't be hard on yourself Chat Icon my dr saw what i gained, mentioned it and then said "who cares, you'll lose it". she's right. as long as you're not eating big mac's for every meal and gaining a lot EVERY visit, don't worry. at my 20 week visit i was up a total of 16lbs.

I had one visit where I gained 6lbs, but only gained 25lbs overall, sometimes you just gain a lot at once, and not much other weeks. Don't be too hard on yourself over it.

Re: Dr. told me to watch my weight gain

I wonder why some doctors care and others don't about that... I keep asking at my appointments because I'm turning into a giant tub of lard (I'm up 15 lbs at 22 weeks, but I was 10 lbs heavier to start this pregnancy than last time) but he keeps telling me not to even think about it. So I just keep eating and feeling happy. I'll see what the midwife at the practice has to say next week. She'll probably tell me to stop being such a giant pig.

I was always up exactly 10 lbs less than the number of weeks I was my last pregnancy (so, up 12 lbs at 22 weeks) and ended up gaining exactly 30 lbs. Lost all but that last 10 then got pregnant again 2 weeks after DD's first bday.

Some doctors just say that as a matter of course I think. That doesn't sound unreasonable to me. My doctor never seemed that concerned about weight.

Re: Dr. told me to watch my weight gain

I had the same type of weight gain at my last drs. visit. I gained 7 lbs. from one appt. to the next, yet only 10 lbs. total in 20 weeks. Dr. told me I had better watch myself too. I have my next appointment coming up next week, and I am so nervous about stepping on the scale again, even though I have really been trying to eat well. No real advice here, but I do sympathize with you! Chat Icon

Re: Dr. told me to watch my weight gain

With both pregnancies, my biggest weight gain was between 16 and 21ish weeks. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Chat Icon

Re: Dr. told me to watch my weight gain

Thanks ladies! You made me feel better! It was just frustrating because for so long in the beginning of my pregnancy I had no appetite and was concerned I wasn't gaining enough. It was just in the last month or so I really got my appetite back. And at first when the nurse weighed me and I saw the higher weight I was happy and even kind of relieved to see that I gained. I even went back to the exam room and happily told DH my new weight. Then the dr. burst my bubble by telling me I had gained too much Chat Icon

I wouldn't worry, you're doctor prob just doesn't want you to get out of control. As long as you're eating healthy (most of the time!Chat Icon).

I gained 7lbs since my last appt but then didn't gain anything the next 2 weeks in a row...your body will do its own thing!

i really think it depends on the practice. I am overweight to begin with and I was petrified of being lectured at my first appointment. The nurse weighed me and no one said a thing after that. This is my second pregnancy and I only gained 16 with my first so maybe they figure I was OK last time, I'll be OK this time? I was shocked that no one said a word about weight.

ITA. The doctors don't always look at the whole picture, they just see the one big gain and want to make sure it doesn't get out of control.

Chat Icon Chat Icon As long as you are eating healthy I wouldn't worry too much. With my first pregnancy I gained 1 lb a week like clockwork. Not matter what I ate- if I ate great one week it was 1 lb weight gain, and if I splurged one week it was still 1lb weight gain. I would just continue what your doing and not worry about the weight gain.

Re: Dr. told me to watch my weight gain

I had the same exact conversation with my dr. Ive decided after beating myself up about it that I'll just lose it when Im done. Im still eating pretty good and I exercise 5 times/week so its not like Im sitting around eating ice cream on the couch every night. Just enjoy your pregnancy if youre feeling comfortable. 12 pounds is perfect.

Re: Dr. told me to watch my weight gain

With my first, I gained weight slowly, but right away. A lot was from eating too many carbs the first trimester because that was all I could handle. I gained 39lbs total, and I think 12 of it was in the first trimester.
With my second, I lost weight in the beginning. I didn't gain a single lb until my 20 week appoint, and it was only a few lbs at that point. Then, the next two visits, I gained 9lbs each time. Everyone (except my dr) commented on how I was tiny and then blowing up. But, this time it was mostly my stomach. I gained 29lbs that time.

I lost it all both times. First time I lost it sooner, even though it was more weight. Second time took about 6-7 mths to lose, first time it took 4 mths.
Unfortunately, I've gained some back now for no reason Chat Icon

I think if you are eating generally healthy and reasonably, your body is doing what it needs, and you shouldn't worry. If you are eating poorly, whether or not you are gaining a lot, try to eat healthier. Doctors shouldn't focus on the numbers, unless they think it is a sign of something being wrong (like pre-e). My doc never worried about it. I raised questions when I was nervous, he asked what I was eating, said it was fine and not to worry.

Re: Dr. told me to watch my weight gain

Don't sweat it! If you're still able to wear your pre pregnancy clothes (cardigans, sweat pants, etc.) then you're gaining weight where you should.
