Taking blood from her ARM?????????????

I remember when I was younger and the Dr. used to prick my finger and take some blood. why is it that at 1 year and just at her 2 year appointment, my DD gave blood through her arm! It was such a traumatic experience for the both of us! On top of it, they took like 5-6 vials so it took a few minutes!

Do your Ped's do this too???????

Re: Taking blood from her ARM?????????????

If they needed 5 or 6 vials, where else would they take it from? Definitely not from a finger.

My ped did do this at DS's 2 yr old appt. It was very hard for me and DS. It tore me apart because he was so upset. The reason they took his blood was to check the iron I think.

at his 1 year, they used a butterfly in his arm. impossible to get the necessary amount from a finger.

I am sure it will be the same at 2 years (when we do it Chat Icon )

Re: Taking blood from her ARM?????????????

my ped did this also. its easier to get more blood out than wait for blood to drip from the finger.

yes dd had it from her arm as well. I had to sit with her in the chair and force the "arm rest" over the both of us, not fun. They then took the blood.

DD was very good and didn't cry at first, until she saw the blood going into the vials. It didn't bother her being pricked at first.

She was more annoyed at the band aid and ripped 1 off and we had to put another one on then her jacket. She had it ripped off in a matter of seconds when we got home Chat Icon

It's a crazy process but they have to do it. It also helps that they do it right in the office so I don't have to make another appointment

DD had blood taken from her arm for her 1 and 2 year blood work. She cried, but luckily the tech was good and did it as fast as she could. They can't get what they need from a finger stick.

Re: Taking blood from her ARM?????????????

the lab had told us that they would not get enough out of the finger. they check for lead as well. They insisted they needed it from the arm.

what a F*** horror to watch that.

Re: Taking blood from her ARM?????????????

And this is why I didn't do the 1 year blood work.
The thought of it disturbs me too much.
If she was sick and needed it, I would of course do it.
But not for my healthy 1 year old.
I just couldn't.
She lived.
Maybe I'll do the 2 year old- I'm on the fence still...

To add insult to injury DS takes after me and its really hard to find veins, so after poking around and torturing him and finally filling a vile they didn't get enough for the testing that needed to be donw and basically had to toss it into the waste basket in front of me and told me to come back another day...needless to say he's 2 now and I never did. Re: Taking blood from her ARM?????????????

DS had his one year blood work done in the pedi office. It was the finger stick. It took 4 nurses to hold him down and one to get the blood. It was so bad.. I would never put him through that again. For his 2 year blood work I asked if we could to it at the lab. It was done in 3 minutes. He cried for about 20 seconds. They are so good with them. I will go back there for any other blood work. They test for so much. It has to be done at some point. He cried more for his shots..

DS had it done at 1 year. Horrible HORRIBLE experience. testing for lead levels.

Ped did not ask for this to be done at 2 y/o

DS just had his blood drawn at PM Pediatrics and I must say, one stick and it was over.Chat Icon

This is one of the many reasons why I like my ped, he takes blood from finger un his office, obviously kids still cry and it's still scary for them , but I feel like it's not as bad as taking it from the arm. Last year we had to do it a the lab don't remember why and they took blood from her arm, it was a NIGHTMARE!

They took blood from the arm. I took them to Quest in Mineola and they both didn't make a peep. I was more so nervous and was surprised it went so well.

Re: Taking blood from her ARM?????????????

I am not shocked. I wouldn't think they would be able to get enough from any other spot. And at that age they won't remeber it in a few hours.

Its more tramatizing for the parent then the child.
