Nursing to Sleep
I know it's VERY frowned upon, but I still nurse my 8-month-old DD to sleep (at night and for naps). I do want to break this habit now, especially since I'd like to wean her around the year mark. Any tips or advice? Help please!

Re: Nursing to Sleep
I think I stopped nursing my little guy to sleep around a year. (although at that point, he wasnt really nursing to sleep because my milk supply had dropped. He would nurse and then I would rock him to sleep.) What worked for us was my husband started putting DS to sleep in our bed. In hindsight I would have told him to not do it in our bed because then we had to get him out of sleeping in our bed. For me, DS stopped sleeping through the night when I stopped nursing him before he went to bed. I think that was because he wanted to be in our bed. So i would advise NOT to put your child to sleep in your bed.

Re: Nursing to Sleep
I stopped when I weaned (during the weaning process). I found that to be the easiest.
What we did was gradually add things to the bedtime routine between nursing and putting to bed. So first we'd add a book in between, then we added a bath... so the routine became: NURSE, BATH, BOOK, BED and then he didn't associate nursing with bed time anymore

Re: Nursing to Sleep
Most BF babies fall asleep nursing. (If I could eat myself to sleep, I probably would, too!) But I started to unlatch DD before she fell asleep, and it was fine.

Re: Nursing to Sleep
It's only "VERY frowned upon" depending on who you ask. I read the Ferber book (the king of "Cry It Out") and expected him to say that it was unacceptable. He didn't. His stance was, if it works, and the baby sleeps well through the night, then why not? Only if your baby wakes up every hour expecting to be nursed back to sleep is it a real problem.
My DD (same age as yours) nurses at night and falls asleep like that about half the time. The other half, she's awake but drowsy and I just put her in the crib, give her a kiss, say goodnight, and leave. Sometimes she cries, sometimes she doesn't, but either way she's asleep within about 5 minutes.

Re: Nursing to Sleep
I didn't even know it was frowned upon..I did it with all three of my kiddies! I forget when it stopped with the first two...all I remember is nursing both until their 1st bday..
But I do nurse my 5 mo old to sleep still and I don't really see that stopping soon!
Occasionally if I just fed her and she wakes during the transfer my DH will rock her back with a binkie
