Cloth diapers with disposable inserts?

I would love to be more green (and save a little money) and use cloth diapers but can't bring myself to deal with all that laundry.

I recently found out that cloth diapers exist with disposable inserts. Does anybody have experience with these?

Do they leak from the insert to the cloth part?
How often do you need to wash the cloth part?
Are they easy to use?
Which brand do you use / have you tried and did you like it?

TIA

I have personal experience, but have a friend who does. I can get more info/details from her, if you like.

Re: Cloth diapers with disposable inserts?

It's hit or miss for us with them. My son is 5.5 months and ebf. He always poops on the cover so it has to be washed.
My daughter is almost 2.5 and if she has formed poops it's great, but again it gets on the cover if we have a suprise one.Chat Icon
We have the Flip system and I 100% love it! You really don't need to invest in a hybrid system, but you can. If you want to do cloth maybe try prefolds and covers. Buy a dozen prefolds and 5-6 covers...thirsties size1 or Bummis. The general rule is if it's just pee on the cover wipe it down and let it dry out. Poop gets washed. I wash my covers every time I do diaper laundry. I will say having a Flip or Grovia in the diaper bag and 2-3 disp. inserts is very nice! fm anytime if you want to know more!

I agree with pp about not needing hybrids. I used prefolds with Thirsties covers with Dd and will use them again with new baby. I also picked up some Bummis wraps too. Both seem to resell at a good price so when you are done you sell them on ebay. I found the Gdiapers (hyrids) to be more expensive since you have to keep buying inserts. I am reusing dd's diapers plus bought a couple smaller ones. So all in all I will spend about $50 to diaper new baby from birth until potty training. Yes I have to do an extra load of laundry every 2-3 days but I did not notice any notable change in water or electricity consumption when we switched to cloth with dd. My dd's tushy was much happier when we switched and she potty trained herself on her 2nd birthday.

Re: Cloth diapers with disposable inserts?

My sister wanted to use them and I actually bought her all the stuff for her shower. She used disposable diapers in the beginning cause she got lots for her shower and when she started to use the cloth they always leaked. She ended up returning unopened ones and goign back to disposable.

Aww that makes me sadChat Icon It is hard, sorta, in the beginning to find the right diaper and fit.

OP like I said I highly suggest prefolds and covers. So easy, they dry super quick and are not a lot of extra laundry. The dispo inserts are nice for travel and diaperbags. Like I also said to pp it can take some time to get your technique and fit right. Just keep trying. IMHO even with the leaks in the beginning and clothing changes it was WAYYYYYY better then any of the blow outs I had with dd in dispo. I have never *knock on wood* had a blow out with my son in cloth. They are wonderful. I would also check out diaperswappers.com on the marketplace forum. I bought 90% of my stash there for a great price and do not regret it at.all. I don't remember if I mentioned this alredy but go to youtube.com and type in cloth diaper channel. This is a colab channel and they have awesome topics and you will learn a ton!

I can fm you if you want, but i'll post here too so others can read this as well!

Prefolds are the Gerber cloth diapres you buy in the store to use as burp cloths. I do NOT suggest using them. They are a poor quality. I like Green Mountain Diapers or GMD as they call them. They absorb the pee, but are not waterproof so you need a cover. Think rubber pants, but with elastic or snaps and way better then your GrandmothersChat Icon I swear go to Youtube.com and search newborn cloth diaper stash or check out the cloth diaper channel on there. They do a great run through. ALso obbs and lala she has a cloth series and it's GREAT!!!! Candidmommy just did a review of her nb stash as well...highly suggest it too!
When we have a nb again this will be my "stash"

12 GMD preemie prefolds(I have small babies)
12GMD newborn prefolds
2 preemie covers (I have small babaies)
2 Bummis newborn covers
2 Thirsties Size 1 covers
2 Lil Joey's
2 Grovia NB
2 Kissoluvs size 0 AIO
2 Bum Genius nb
2 Fuzzi Bunz xs

The lil joyes, grovia, kissoluvs, and bum genius are called AIO (all in ones) they are JUST like dispos. You velcro them on, when dirty pull off and throw into a diaper pail with a diaper liner. The FB is a pocket diaper..you stuff an insert into it. I could go on and on, but seriously check out the above people. They explain it so much better and you can see what i'm saying too! I swear it is sooooooooo easy! If you have a laundry room in your home I highly suggest it. If you go to a laundrymat I would maybe not, but that's just me. Also keep in mind it doesn't have to be an all or nothing thing. You can do cloth at home and use disp for travel or the diaper bag. I don't because I figure I have to wash diapers anyway so why bother and Sawyer has an allergy to disp. anyway.

All in all my stash is large. I have prefolds, covers, and assorted AIO's and pockets. I spent maybe $600 on it. That is a lot up front, but I don't ever have to buy another diaper again......NEVER EVER no matter how many kids we have! The resale is pretty good to if you take care of them and honestly you get over whatever phobia you have after diaper change #1Chat Icon You can also buy newborn packages for $60. They include prefolds and covers and you could try that.

Thanks so much! I'll be checking out those videos when i get home from work today!!

My problem is that i live in an apt building and don't have my own washing machine. That's one of the main reasons for considering the hybrid systems....

Ahhhhhh I get it now! I really hate saying this, but maybe a hybrid system would be better when the baby is older and having solid poop. Like I said I have the problem with it getting on the cover and then you have to wash it anyway defeating the reuse it thought. I can't imagine doing cloth without my own washer. Not so much dryer as you can get a dry rack to dry them on. Is the apt laundry busy? Could you see yourself doing laundry there twice more a week even just for washing only?

Re: Cloth diapers with disposable inserts?

You can look into G diapers but, Ive heard they leak. May be worth a shot tho.

The disposalbe inserts are additional but you can flush them.

I could do laundry twice a week if necessary, but since it's not free, it'd definitely eat up some funds.

I was looking at the hybrids but honestly, they're even more expensive than the fully disposable ones so i'm not sure it's really worth it at this time.

The liners themselves were about 30 cents each, while disposable diapers are about 17 cents each! HUGE difference (especially since with hybrids, i'd also need to buy the outer shells AND do laundry).

Can anyone suggest more affordable hybrid liners (maybe i just searched wrong Chat Icon )

Thanks again!

Re: Cloth diapers with disposable inserts?

I should have shared thsi with everyone also
This is from a friend of mine who uses cloth diapers!

http://www.kellyscloset.com/Cloth-Diaper-Information_ep_34-1.html and/or http://www.theclothdiaperwhisperer.com/. Both have a lot of info for beginners that will really explain everything to her.

As for your questions, here they are:

-There is no "leaking", I use mostly pocket diapers. It's basically a cloth (washable/reusable) version of a disposable diaper, except it has a "pocket" that you stuff with microfiber (MF) or hemp (my fave!) or cotton to absorb moisture (pee and poo). The outer part of the pocket is a fabric - usually suedecloth or fleece like material that draws the moisture from the baby onto whatever is inside the pocket. The idea is that the baby stays dry (no diaper rashes) and you can go longer in between diaper changes.

-It's recommended that diapers are washed every other day. I get home late and am a bit lax about this, but really a load should be done every 2 days at the most (my last wash was Sunday, I need to get on it!)

-Easy is relative. There's washing and stuffing (the pocket diapers) and folding...but they work like a disposable in that you just put the diaper on the baby and when the diaper is soiled you throw the whole thing in the wetbag until it's wash day. I won't go back to disposables and LOVE that I never have to buy diapers again. It gets easier over time. It can be overwhelming at first, which is why I never did it with Kairo. I wish I had started sooner.

-I have bumGenius! 4.0 and Freetime (that's an All-In-One, the cloth equivalent to a disposable...no stuffing, you put the whole thing on the baby, take the whole thing off and wash, nothing goes inside), Happy Heinys, FuzziBunz, KaWaii, Ones&Twos, Grovia, AppleCheeks, Blueberry and Thirsties. I also have prefolds and covers that I use on Kairo since he's such a heavy wetter at night.

My favorite diaper brand is bumGenius! They fit Kannon perfectly. My least favorite is FuzzyBunz. But I have a chunky baby, that brand is for skinny babes.

Hope this helps!
