Not so good 20 week appt (SUA related)
So I went for my 20 week appt today and it turns out at my 16 week sono they found the umbilical cord has only 1 ventricle when normally they have 2. Upon further research I found its called SUA. And its a soft marker for Downs and other defects. I can choose to have an amnio, but my Dr is not pushing for it. There were no other markers found and my numbers were 1 in 9000 for Downs, and 1 in >250000 for trisomy. In any case, at 26 weeks I have to go in weekly for NST. And also have to go for a fetal echocardiogram to make sure her heart is ok. I am reading all about it online and its making me absolutely mad. Tomorrow is my level II and after we will meet with a genetic counselor. Its strange, but I secretly wanted a girl so badly, ever since I found out I am having one I feel like its too good to be true and something awful is going to happen. Does anyone have any experience with SUA? And can anyone provide any opinion on how my stats measure up? I know its my own choice, but would you have an amnio?? Thanks everyone.

I'm sorry you are going through this . I'm not familiar with stats, but I'm pretty sure this is what my friend explained one of her twins having. They are 3 now and are both totally happy and healthy. I know they monitored he closely too.

I have no experience with this but sending hugs and lots of prayers. Also my advise would be stay off the computer, when I was pregnant my fluid level was high and so I went home and looked it up and it made me crazy and my little girl turned out to be perfectly fine.

Unfortunately like the others, no experiencewith SUA, but lots of hugs and prayers. I had an elevated risk of downs but declined amnio. I think you are right it is very personal decision. Wish you the best...

Re: Not so good 20 week appt (SUA related)
One of my twins, Travis, had a SUA. We had the fetal echo done all all was OK. They also did sono of his kidneys after he was born (before we were discharged from the hospital) because there are sometimes renal anomolies associated with SUA. Again, all OK. I had growth sonos every other week because sometimes SUA could restrict growth. He was born a little smaller than his sister (5 lbs 5 oz vs 6 lbs 2 oz at 36w6d) but nothing to be concerned about. He is a totally normal, healthy almost-2 yr old now. He is average height/weight and above average on all his milestones. It is definitely scary hearing something is different with your pregnancy, but it is important to remember that SUA doesn;t automatically mean something more will be wrong. Good luck with the echo.
ETA: if you said there are no other markers its highly unlikely the bay has Downs or Trisomy 18, etc. I was not concerned about these conditions during my SUA pregnancy because ONE soft marker rarely means anything. I did not go for amnio but did follow up with the extra sonos and echo. I was more concerned about heart, kidneys, and growth.

Re: Not so good 20 week appt (SUA related)
First off. Introductions. I am the husband writing. My wife and I had the same issue with our first daughter. SUA is single umbilical artery. When we first found out I went home and researched it online. All I did was drive myself crazy reading dozens of things that could be associated with SUA. The one thing I saw but didn't truly appreciate is that the majority of the time SUA is associated with completely normal children. I didn't focus on that because human nature is to fear the worst so instead I thought about all the things that could be wrong......for 20 weeks I tortured myself. Well as it turns out our daughter is completely fine. MOST of the time it is a random occurrence that has NO affect on the pregnancy. When there is a problem SUA is only one of MANY signs. So if that is the only thing that you see the odds are you will have a normal pregnancy and child. We had to get a sono every two weeks because we were considered "high risk" That just increased our paranoia. Our little girl now is a healthy, smart and normal 3 year old. I truly hope everything goes well for you and that this helped a little.

With this pregnancy they found a cyst on the baby's brain (very, very common) and that he has only 1 kidney. Having 2 markers and me being 37 threw everyone into a tizzy, mind you 1 kidney is NOT a marker for anything and I have great #'s, but the Drk4 reaction scared the piss out of me. The above is the reason I chose to have an amnio. I couldn't face the next 20 weeks fearing the worst. I had to know. Everything came back normal and I am so glad I did it.

Same here. My friend just had a very healthy baby girl at 39 weeks and had SUA. I know it's tough - but hang in there.

Re: Not so good 20 week appt (SUA related)
i too have no experience but wanted to wish you luck tomorrow!
as you said, it's totally up to you, but if i were in your shoes, i'd probably opt for an amnio (or maybe the MaterniT test since it's non-invasive) just so that i could stop worrying and wondering for the next few months.
