girls who live in the city
how do you go about finding a day care/nanny? while i ultimately plan on being a SAHM, i want to be prepared in case finances require that i work for a few more years. i know it's early, but figured i should get the ball rolling. one of my girlfriends put her name on a day care waiting list before getting pregnant. she now has a 2 month old and is STILL on the waiting list. unfortunately, i can't ask her for details, because we haven't announced our pregnancy yet!

Definitely start looking now. I started researching very early. Nannies are very expensive, so day care was what we ultimately decided on. We actually just moved out of Manhattan and now live in Astoria, Queens - but I did start my search in Manhattan. There are not a TON of day care options and sometimes they are just as expensive as a nanny! Another option is to look into a nanny-share, in which you would go in with another family and split the nanny and the costs.

Re: girls who live in the city
I started to ask my friends for Daycare recommendations near the apartment and we're going to check them out.
My aunt said she would watch baby but I wanted to make sure we had a plan b just in case she cannot watch baby.
I guess I would check out different daycare centers around your neighborhood and just go to their websites since you're not telling people yet. Maybe you can ask your friend who is still on the waiting list of where she checked out daycare places since you're thinking about getting preggers so that doesnt out you?

Definitely start looking at daycares now if you're thinking that route - it is never too early. Our first choice has a 1 year waiting list, so we'll probably have to get a private nanny until that opens up. We'll plan to use SitterCity.com or a local Google / Yahoo group for moms.

yup. i live in the flatiron, just south of madison sq park. however, we're in a 1br, so will need to move to a 2br, which we plan to do a month or two before the baby comes. DH wants to stay in the area, but i feel that the UES or UWS are more kid friendly. so, that's another challenge to add on - now we have to broaden our day care search, because we have no idea where we will be come fall!

Re: girls who live in the city
It's a nice area - I work close on Park btw 25 and 26 and lived on 28th and 2nd until a few weeks ago when we moved to Astoria (we also needed a 2br because of the baby and felt we'd get more space for our money out here) But I miss being in the city. At least I get to come in for work everyday :)
Good luck on your search. Maybe look for something in mid-town or close to your job.
