Re: is it true??

I don't know, but my OB just informed me last week that they don't DO episiotomies. I was like really? So what? You tear? And she said they actually do everything they can to prevent tearing. I didn't realize some OBs didn't do episiotomies at all.

Re: is it true??

Most don't do them unless there's a need. Back 30 years ago, they were the "norm" and sometimes done when there was no need. It was like "oh, you're in labor... let's just snip here to help" but they don't do that anymore.

If a little cut is what you need to get that baby out, though, they'll still do it. But it's more of a game-time decision.

I pushed for 1 h 25 m with DD... both the nurse and my OB were there with the oil trying to physically pull and stretch me apart because DD's giant head just would NOT get through. Finally after all that time, my OB said to me "I think a cut is really what we need here. Is that ok?" and I told him to ask DH because I was in no position to be making decisions right then (it hurt... a lot... no meds lol). In any event, he cut and then cut the cut a tiny bit larger and she popped RIGHT out! I tore terribly upwards -- two tears in a V-shape -- despite the cut. But there was DD!!!! None of the rest of that mattered.

Healing from the episiotomy was a zillion times better than healing from where I tore. It took somewhere between 2-3 hours to get stitched back up (the tear was terrible). Then the stitches didn't heal properly up top. But the part he cut healed up in no time and didn't hurt at all after.

Oh the irony when DH originally was SUPER against my being cut at all (I didn't care -- it's not like I look down there much). If he'd cut me sooner, she might have been born before midnight instead of at almost 1 am lol.

Anyway, I think they just go with the flow.

Re: is it true??

I've had pitocin twice and never had to have an episiotomy. I was lucky and only tore a little with my 2nd.

I don't know if it's common to have an episiotomy when pitocin is used but I did have both.
