OMG I'm going to flip my lid
I just renewed my passport and changed my name to my married name. So everything went great with the passport coming quickly and I was amazed and thrilled. Until today. I just got my mail and found a manilla envelope that was clearly not closed properly, the seal opened completely. Inside of it is my original birth certificate with raised seal, marriage cert, old passport and my SS card. ARE you effing kidding me? The envelope is COMPLETELY open! I called our federal government, they were less than interested and assured me it's a POs problem. I asked why they didnt use the express enveloe i prepad for and put in with the application and the had no answer I just got ff the phone with my postmaster and he asked my mail carrier while I was on the phone and he said he knew it was open so he " tucked the flap inside" and put it in my mailbox. He assured me postal workers don't look inside envelopes but if I want to make a complaint online I can. Jesus Christ, I cannot even imagine What I need to do now to protect my identity. Every single piece of info someone would need to steal my identity was in there.
Does anyone have any idea where I go from here? Do I need a new SS# ? Where do I even begin?

I'm sorry that this happened and hoping that nothing goes wrong.
Start with a fraud alert on all three credit reporting agencies. You will probably have to renew the fraud alert in a few months. That's all I can think of for now. Not sure if you have to file a police report as well.

Kelly, can you FM me your info? I can get you in touch with the folks at the State Dept and make them aware of what happened. Your passports should have been returned to you with all of the other documents in the SAME envelope.
That said, I would immediately check and put an alert on your credit reports to make sure that no cards or loans have been taken out in your name.
This link from SSA outlines what to do if your SSN has been stolen.
I'm so sorry!

You can also have them put something on your credit where NO ONE can open credit in your name without you being contacted first (You get a password). It will cost you $5 I think each time someone (like a car dealer) has check your credit, but I think it is totally worth it. Especially in your situation.
