But its like, who needs a pickup truck in NY? And not eating at Arby's? Not having evangelicl friends.

Why don't we give a quiz about how many live theatre presentations you've seen, whether or not you have gay friends or friends of a different race, friends of different religions, and decide who is living in a bubble that way

ITA. Really bizarre.

I agree. My score was right around the both of yours at a 40, and I don't really feel like I'm living a "super bubbled" life. I don't think that eating or not eating at Arby's is the most pressing social issue out there today.

I really have to agree with this. I scored REALLY low, like single digit low Chat Icon and I hardly think I live in a bubble.

How does owning a pick up truck or frequenting fast food places mean you don't live an insular life? Chat Icon

I think it's because there is a large majority of people who eat at fast food regularly because they maybe can't afford to eat at nicer restaurants. That they go to movies more often than broadway plays because they can afford the movies and can't afford to see a live play. Pick up trucks because they tend to involve manual labor which again indicates they are blue collar. The fact that you are questioning this may indeed reflect that you do indeed live in a bubble.

Re: Do you live in a Bubble?

This quiz seemed dumb and I agree that it doesn't give an accurate depiction of whether you live in a "bubble" or not.

It seems to focus more on "middle America" being the norm and everyone outside of it being snobby.

I think the fact that we a re questioning the validity of this quiz shows just how bubbled we are.

outside of the East Coast and especially NY area, America IS evangelicals, fast food places, and pick up trucks.

that is the whole point of this quiz.

we are not, and we are not exposed to, for the most part, what "american" culture is because we are so much more influenced and exposed to the other cultures of the world.

that is the point.

Re: Do you live in a Bubble?

here is the thing...never in my life have I ever felt i lived in a bubble until I was 28. I completely felt I was in a bubble, I called it my stay in lala land. sahms with no life issues, just having fun. going out at night together, hanging out at neighborhood private pools during the day. husbands with job security.
bubbles have very little problems, it is safe in a bubble.
i am now out of my bubble and feel the effects daily.

everyone now around me is trying to get the hell out of their surroundings and crave more.
and i have been to broadway shows, museum, the met, symphonies in the park.

Think about it for a moment (not your score, but the insular life question.

People who are insulated look down at a menu (not up). People who are insulated dont wear a uniform to work (They wear a suit). People who are insulated buy cars, they dont need a pickup for manual labor.

Yes, they WOULD go to see theater. But they would go see "The Kings Speech" before "Iron man".

Basically, the smarter and more educated you are, the MORE insulated you would be. That doesent mean you ARE.

But I would say they girl who works the morning shift atr McDonalds and the eve shift cleaning toiletts knows more about the hard knocks of life than most.

And take Mitt Romney. He is SO rich he has NO clue as to how REAL americans live.

(That was not a dig at Romney, just a comment on how wealthy he is)

I suppose I can see your point but I guess I have issue with who decides what the "bubble" is when it comes to America.

For the record, I scored 66 so I know I don't have a super thick "bubble" but that is likely because I left NY at one point and experienced other parts of the country.

But then isn't America just it's own slightly larger bubble? I just thought this quiz would be more WORDLY and not just about America.

But just by what you described I'd say THOSE people live in a bubble as well since all they seem to know is fast food, movies and pick up trucks.

So while I may know those things, I ALSO know Broadway shows, vacations, etc.

So by your definition there can't be any high end restaurants ANYWHERE else in the country?

No one else other than those in the East Coast goes on vacation and never eats fast food?

Again, I just don't see it. There are some VERY affluent areas in Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Nebraska, Utah, Texas, Arizona, etc.

So no, I don't think we're that far off from the norm.

Yeah this is what I was trying to get at before. It's like we are all in our own bubbles because what is the norm in middle America is not the norm in say the South, East coast or West coast where there might be more dense populations.

Isn't that what makes America, well, America? That there is so much differences between all areas that no single one is a full representation of our country?

it's not my definition. it's the nature of the quiz.

and yes, there can be nice restaurants in other places, but there is no Metropolitan Opera.

Money does not equal culture. money does not equal experience outside your own bubble, but rather usually the opposite.

simply living in Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Nebraska exposes you to move of what the American culture (or bubble as someone said) puts you more in touch with it (and this was also touched upon by the designer of the test in the description).

we are very far off.

YOU and I are very far off in some respects b/c of the way we grew up.

it's not bad. it's not wrong. it just is what it is.

But that's my point. We DID grow up very differently, and therefore are different people.

We each grew up in our own bubbles. Mine different from yours, yours different from mine, ours different from the little blonde haired girl from Iowa who grew up on a farm.

We ALL have our bubbles. We don't know theirs and they don't know ours...

So who is to say which is better? I feel like this quiz suggests that the more money you have the more insular you are and I don't agree.

Those with money get to travel the globe, experience ALL different kinds of lifestyles and cultures. Do they know what it's like to dig a ditch for minimum wage? NO. But that doesn't mean they live more in a bubble than the ditch digger.

It just means they live different lives.

Re: Do you live in a Bubble?

So, interesting.

I just took this test again and based it on a more "country" lifestyle.

I got a 53.

So, being a pickup truck driving, nascar watching, greyhound bus riding, waffle house visiting, evangelical who has worked manual labor and lettered in sports doesn't mean you're in an opposite bubble.

Why?

Because this is about exposure to AMERICAN life. American life, off of Long Island, which is where the majority of the country is. Being richer doesn't mean that you're not exposed to culture, it means that you're probably more insulated from the daily happenings for most of Americans. It's not an insult to you for being upper middle class or rich, it's how insulated are you from the rest of America. I'm sure that many people in Kansas City or Iowa could also get scores in the single digits. If you really read the author's comments at the bottom you may get it more.

Re: Do you live in a Bubble?

I think the point of this test is that the MORE money you have, the more sheltered life you leave, and the bigger your bubble to the "outside world".

Again, Mitt Romney has never known a hard days work in his life.

Think about it.

In his whole life.

He has never worked retail. Lifted bags of sand. Had to get the kids to daycare. Went to the grocery store. Went to COSTCO!

People who are rich dont go to the grocery store. They have people to do that. They have nannies. Multiple nannies. They dont do laundry. They dont fill up the tank with gas. They dont fix the ______ when it breaks. They have people.

They *NEVER* look "up" to see a menu.

This is about rich and poor. And people on the east coast tend to have more money and more exposure to culture and the "finer" things in life. Thus we are MORE bubbled than, lets say, people who live in Alabama.

Re: Do you live in a Bubble?

There are plenty of rich people that DO GOOD. That are TRUE philanthropists. That REGARDLESS of their own net worth help others, see how the "other half" lives and do something positive to help.

I know, I've met people like this. They're the ones who aren't afraid to get their hands dirty to help someone, they are the same people who have the resources to use their private plane to pick up a sick child in a foreign country and bring him/her to this country to receive life saving heart surgery.

I know these people exist as much as Mitt Romney.

These people, for all their money, IMO, do NOT live in an insular world. They are FULLY aware they have more than others and they do something good with it. They're aware of the world around them.

Remember not everyone with money was born into it. Some of them actually WORKED for what they have.

And that is in the explanation too, that someone who is forced outside their own insular world will score higher.

If you click on "why is this question here" underneath it explains why they're there.
